Will the new features in UE3 “blow people away”?

Posted by Ahmad Dajani On July - 24 - 2009

Epic boss Mark Rein revealed to VG247 that a new features in the latest version of the Unreal Engine “will blow people away.”  and if they had an engine incremental numeration system “we’d be at about 3.8 right now” .

When the original gears of war game was released in 2006, it raised the bar in the graphics department, but when other developers started to get more familiar with Xbox 360 and PS3, we started to see games that matched Gears and even surpassed it in the graphics department.

While Gears 2 is still one of the best looking games, most of us (gamers) including me expected Gears 2 to raise the bar higher. After the release of Killzone 2 this year I read/watched a lot of graphics comparison between these two games with most of the comparisons giving Killzone 2 the upper hand.

Then Naughty Dog announced that Uncharted 2 will use all the power of the PS3 and how it will raise the bar again graphically. When Naughty Dog showed Uncharted 2 at Sony E3 2009 press conference, all gamers around the world were blown away.

Epic games aren’t happy with all the talk about Killzone 2/Uncharted 2 and how these games are more advanced graphically than Gears 2. So I think Epic games are still hard at work to bring back it’s own engine at the top of the game. First they showed us a glimpse of the the new capabilities of the modified Unreal Engine in the Snowblind map by displaying the new snow weather effect.

Now they are doing it again with the upcoming All Fronts Collection and Dark Corner DLC, here they are showing how the modified Unreal Engine can render particle effect sush as dust, one of the reasons why Killzone 2 have the edge over Gears 2 graphically.

I think if they want to compete with the best games in term of graphics, they need to improve the Lightning system and to optimize the engine to run more smoothly.

Even if they managed to improve the engine with more enhancements, i still think they have a fierce competetion with CryEngine 3 and other games engines. So the big question is will Unreal Engine return at the top of the game?

killzone 2 and uncharted has the best graphics and advanced game engine right now . killzone 2 is the most technologically advance engine in history . it has the best graphics , physics and animations ever in a video game and i’m quite sure that gears of war 3 wont be as advance as killzone 2′s tech. i cant imagine what killzone 3 will look like.

no offense to epic but there words means nothing. i remember all the things that were promised to be in gears of war 2 and when i played it they were missing. gears of war 2 graphics was exactly like gears of war 1 if not less detailed and the technical aspects of the game was worse than gears 1. i cant believe the amount of glitches and frame rate drops that is in gears of war 2 and it was suppose to be a way more poished game than gears 1. the online on gears of war 2 is just unacceptable . a lot of people might like it when they dont know better or have experienced better but after experiencing games like killzone 2, mgs 4, resistance 2 , uncharted 2 and others with beautiful graphics, more people in one room with no lag or glitches , i cant see why i should play a broken game like gears of war 2. i love gears 1 and played for years but was disappointed with gears of war 2 .

They were behind to begin wit killzone 2 and i guerilla said they updated and added more effects to there enging so i cant imagine in the next few years a dev that can top guerilla although uncharted 2 and god of war 3 look pretty close

i was not overly impressed with killzone 2.. sure it looks good.. but not so much so that the graphics make up for some of the games shortcomings.. uncharted 2 looks fantastic.. but again, looks alone do not a game make.. i own a ps3 and xbox360 and the xbox gets more run based on GAMES i like on that system.. not to mention most of my friends r xbots.. the only people i know who bought the ps3 wanted the cheap blu-ray option when blu-ray players were prohibitively expensive.. not true gamers.. i think that is what sony is struggling with right now.. the attach rates r not too good for the system.. but i think both systems have their strengths and weaknesses and there are many EXCLUSIVE games that i am excited for on both systems..

  6. Jack Said,

    @Dave

The attach rate on the ps3 isn’t the problem; if it were, PS3 multiplatform games would never sell nearly as well as on the x360. Case in point: RE5, SF4, Burnout, DMC4, just to name a few big ones. And i don’t know what you mean by “true gamers” I guess you think people didn’t buy a ps3 for games.

The 360 hasn’t produced anything as technically advanced as MGS4 as of yet. Multiplatform games do look better on 360 than the PS3 counterpart, almost always actually. But when it comes down to it, the PS3′s exclusives are the best in the console business. Many would agree, Killzone 2 looks better than Gears 2, Gran Turismo 5 looks better than Forza 3, Uncharted looks better than…everything. Killzone 2′s been out since February, and 360 hasn’t had a game, nor do they in their lineup that will match its visual quality

    @ dave:

A good game must cover more areas other than graphics, if a game have fun gameplay, good story and music it’s better than having incredible visuals and bad game play.

But here am discussing will the new features in the UE live up to the hype?

    KZ2 has an horrible framerate???
sorry, but the game runs smooth as butter … i had never any framerate drops, not offline and not online.

maybe you’re refering to the small loading pauses in the SP campaign, but that’s only to avoid loading screens and has nothing to do with poor framerate.
read any KZ2 review and they all say it runs completely smooth.

Wow, didn’t know 30fps is considered “smooth as butter”. Both the puny consoles suck actually. It is enough to look at something like Crysis and see where graphics can actually go (shame the game itself and its expansion, Warhead, are borefests).

    @ Leo
sorry killzone 2 runs better than crysis engine at normal settings… meaning you dont spend 1k plus just to play a game… that’s why pc games aren’t good as console games in terms of the most bang for your buck.

Sorry to break it to you. But the processing is those Gears 2 vids you post lag far behind a lot of games. Even LP2 is doing it much better.

  15. name Said,

unreal 3 engine is just to old, unreal 4 i cant see that getting any where near KZ2 quality.
the unreal engine makes games look extremely grainy especially rocks look so rough even water looks really rough.
i found uncharted to be the same, i hope uncharted 2 has a more smooth look to the objects instead of everything looking so rough and pixelated.
to me the game that had the best graphics is definetly MGS4.
everything looked so smooth and shiney high detail in the enviroment lots off color, unlike gears and KZ2.
KZ2 no doubt had better effects but graphics id have to give it to MGS4.

That’s why I wrote this article to see what gamers think of the improvements done in UE3.

I think they will improve it further, but UE is still a middleware engine which means it’s not optimized to take advantage of one console, so we will see in the future how much can Epic games improve it’s own engine.

when it comes to gears the unreal engine will allways run better.
because im pretty sure epic, the people who created the engine now how to optimize it better than out side devs.
so games epic create using the unreal engine will allways look better than games that other devs create using the same engine.

Mark Rein and Epic can kiss my ass after all that “bigger, better, more badass” horseshit he and Cliffy B came out with during the GoW2 pre-release hype-fest. I don’t think i’ll ever believe anything those jumped-up pricks will ever say again.

But on the subject of graphics I’m quite looking forward to seeing how M$’ dedicated X-Engine and new toolkit will look in a year or two when devs get to grips with ‘em. Could usurp UE3 altogether. Then maybe we’ll see what Xenos can really do. Watch this space…

  19. David Said,

This whole argument is stupid. These are CORRIDOR shooters..meaning you’re restricted to a limited path. Companies going after eachother saying “We’re better because we have more particles in our corridor” or “we have better lighting in ours!” is lame. Try Arma 2 or even the almost 2 year old Crysis games,,BIG worlds and way better graphics than anything either of these bozo companies make.

“Cutting edge” only exists on the PC.

@RROD – I spent $1,200 building my comp. To say I spent all that money “just to play one game” is incredibly ignorant.
