GOW III will be a sales monster? I don’t think so
SCE Santa Monica’s anticipated PS3 beat ‘em up God of War 3 will arrive in stores come March 2010, the game holds the biggest hype amount possible for a videogame ever and speculation never ends about if it will be the game that can truly define the PS3 brand and the game that will help the PS3 to decrease the sold consoles gap between the PS3 and Xbox360, but why being so much optimistic?
The only thing that PS3 owners should be so much sure about is that GOWIII will be a bloody fantastic game and that it will raise the bar for its competitors on every aspect, GOWIII will undoubtedly show a different face than the one we saw on the last E3 trailer and it will be on a much more improved level by the upcoming March.
The other thing that I’m really not sure about is “Why PS3 owners are so much sure that the game will be a sales monster!” and PS3 owners count on GOW3 as the game that can be multi-million (consoles) seller!
Ok, No one can urges the fact that GOWIII will be the final installment of the multi-million unit-selling trilogy, but in the same time a quick check to the previous sales chart for the original GOW and GOWII can tell us so much about the real situation.
GOW II sold over 2.5 million copies even it was an option for more than 120,000,000 PS2 owners at that time, I know some people will say that the game had 17+ ESRB, but that can’t be the real reason, let’s say 50,000,000 of the PS2 owners were 17 or above, so I think it’s still not that great record for such a game,and keeping in mind that the upcoming GOWIII will have even less than 20% of its prequels consoles installed base or let’s say “possible buyers” the game may even struggle to match its prequels records.
GOWIII will be a fantastic game for sure and undoubtedly it will do just fine in the market but let’s be real and far from any fanboisem which causing “Gamers Blindness” illness for some of us, GOWIII will never be a match for top sellers like GTA or HALO series, even though if you asked me I know the game will be more than a match for them technically.

while price drop and the near future games getting better and wanted more and more; increasing PS3 user base; the game itself needs more! even though mgs4 was much anticipated it offered so much content in main game plus mg online. gow3 needs to not only succeed features in parts 1 & 2, but, to make use of 50gbs of space doing everything including and aside from trophy support (never a mention of online play), all to insure re-playability.

People are more interested in the fact it’ll sell systems. A lot of systems. It has a decent following now and 3million sales isn’t shabby.
I imagine the price drop + GOW3 will push a lot of systems which is more what people are getting excited about

It’s even more estonishing that it DID sell that well, so late in the PS2 life-cycle. A lot of the users had already switched to Next-Gen-Consoles, and a lot of the hardcore crowd did pirate the game (modding PS2′s was fairly easy at that time). A lot more players have enjoyed God of War 1 and 2 than the sales would make you believe.
So despite only selling 5 million copys combined on PS2, and the big re-seller market for single-player games, I think that the GoW-franchise will easily break 3,5 million copys on PS3 during it’s first 12 months .

Man I respect ur openion, but regarding the moded PS2′s I think u should keep in ur mind that the Xbox360 modding is also fairly easy these days but despite that fact Bunge managed to sell 10 million copies of HALO3, anyways I hope the game can break its prequels records,

Man here in VGArabia.com we are just trying to be REAL, and avoid the same mistake when all the gaming community hyped KZ2 like never before and then what, KZ2 couldn’t reach 2 millions after 5 months…I’m sure u and me undoubtedly will buy the game but believe it or not half of these people who’s writing hundreds of post’s defending GOWIII will never buy the game once its released.

Man I totally agree with u and KZ2 was more than a “great game” it is one of the best FPS ever and I think no other game can compete with the quality of its online component, but what I’m saying in this article is that I’m not optimistic regarding “sales performance” of GOWIII , and even u and so many other gamers don’t care about sales u should keep in ur mind that the ppl who will bring GOWIII to ur PS3 really cares about sales and at the end of the day their excellent performance needs to be reflected on sales figures not only on their games reviews because that the way they live!

Ok you do have a good point there that GOW 1 and 2 didn’t sell that much. However did you consider how many of those ps2 owners are casual gamers? LOTS. and most of them have switched to the wii, yes the wii not the ps3, most ps3 owners are hardcore gamers, figure out the point i’m trying to make here

I think God of War 3 will do Killzone 2 sales. A big opening week, then 300k the next week, then 100k the next week, and then it’ll do the average 20k – 50k a week. It will probably end up selling 2 – 2.5 million. Sony’s biggest franchise has always been Gran Turismo, so I’m always telling others that if there’s one game that is going to move PlayStation 3′s, it’s definitely Gran Turismo.

The real reasons were piracy and modchips + in the later years casual gamers. Fortunately PS3 hasn’t been hacked yet. GoW III will probably sell more than GoW I or GoW II. Although, I agree it won’t sell as much as it would deserve (at least Gears of War numbers).

To be honest with,God of War sales were hampered by FUCKING piracy on the PS2.And god of war 2 went on to sell over 2.5 mil inspite of piracy on not just the in the third world countries like india,srilanka etc, but also in the developed countries.Its tough for ppl in my country india to buy a original game.Now god of war3 is on Blu Ray thanks to PS3 and blu ray discs are yet to be pirated.So i have a strong feeling that GOD OF WAR 3 will sell over 6mil in the first 1 month and another 6mil in the coming months,which adds upto a mammoth 12mil.Before all this could happen,sony better be bringing the price of the ps3 to a mere 240US$,200POUNDS AND 200Euros

Wow.. with GOW 1 & 2 being great games, to compare them to several other games the sales numbers are good. But with so many PS2 sold that numbers should of been a lot higher. But then again those numbers most likely does not include pre-own sells and ebay sells also. Not sure it will be the big turn around Sony needs. It will help. There been several games over the past that many said will drive PS3 sells (Killzone 2, MGS4 and several others) did not move PS3 like many thought. GOW 3 will be a great game and sell in the millions but will it help Sony in the way Sony need. Selling more PS3

Ok as others have stated. It came out when a few people were leaving the PS2 for the 360. It was the year after PS3 was came out. Also are we talkin lifetime numbers on GOW III? At a Greatest Hits title on PS2 its been 20 bucks for about a year and a half. If you don’t think Sony will bundle it with the PS3 next year you need a good drink. (or need to stop drinking!) That alone would insure it will sell 2-3 million easily.

who really cares about sales?
take KZ2 for example theres rumors saying it cost 60M to make (which i think is total BS but meh)
$60 per game (ignoring other country prices) times 2M sales.
thats 120M bucks i think thats more than enough profit for GG to create a KZ3.
most games these days cost between 20-40M to make, games are bloody expensive to buy so they only need to make 1M sales to make there money back and then some.
plus santa monica are a first party sony studio even if GOW3 flunked (aint gona happen) and sold 1 copy im sure sony would be able to bail them out and keep funding them for the future.
and remember this is the last game for this storyline there will be another GOW game, but wont be along the same storyline and probably wont have kratos in it because im thinking he dies.

Other things to consider is that the PS2 library of games was far bigger than the PS3′s. The PS3 has a great library; but the PS2 library was definetly bigger. I didn’t buy GOW2 simply coz I didn’t have time to play it. I don’t own as many PS3 games as I did PS2 games when that was released. I will be buying GOW3!
Also; there will be plenty of those 2.5m people who bought GOW2 that haven’t bought a PS3 yet; maybe they’ll pick up the PS3 just for GOW3.

These figures don’t take into acount the fact that many PS2 owners re-bought the system when the PStwo came out, so you have duplicate sales there, as well as the many, many people who bought the PS2 originally as a cheap DVD player, which was quite a substantial amount. It did, after all, lead to DVD being the chosen format instead of that stupid digital tape thing.
Plus, a game like God of War is more appealing to western audiences, and therefore would generate more sales in western markets. I highly doubt very many Japanese gamers bought GoW, and Japan very highly favoured the PS2 over the other last-gen systems.
