Batman: Arkham Asylum review

Posted by Ahmad Dajani On August - 24 - 2009

This year, we have enjoyed a vast number of games; from Killzone 2 to Resident Evil 5, but if you were living under a rock for the past few months, you would have noticed the huge number of games that have featured a super hero or a character from our favorite comic books.

It’s all began with a game called X-Men Origins: wolverine which featured our favorite comic hero Wolverine. The game was released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. The game tried so hard to erase the bad image for games based on movies are known for. After that, PS3 owners received their own exclusive super hero game, Infamous. The game was critically successful and scored an enormous number of good scores. Then, prototype followed it shortly on the PS3 and Xbox 360, which was also critically successful and offered a more action-packed experience than Infamous.

But you may ask yourself, why am mentioning all of these games? Mark my words now, Batman: Arkham Asylum is the best super hero/comic game to be ever released. It’s also one of the best action-adventure games to be released this generation.

While each game mentioned above (don’t count in Killzone 2 and Resident Evil 5) offered something different from the other, Batman: Arkham Asylum offered a more complete experience.

Batman: Arkham Asylum is a third-person action game which starts the Dark Knight, Batman. Who has captured his immortal rival, the Joker. It’s a bit strange opening for a game, as everybody expect Batman to be struggling to capture him. But you guessed it, things will not go the way you may expect. Even Batman has a bad feeling about it, as he recalled that the Joker has Surrendered without a fight.

Batman bring the Joker back to a building in Arkham to imprison him. After that, some events will unfold and the consequences will result in escaping the joker with a little help from Harley Quinn. From here, your adventure will actually begin.

From here, you will dive into what the game has to offer. The first thing you will notice is how sharp this game looks. The textures look detailed and the characters models looks fantastic. There are some odd moments where the characters seem to look like plastic and extra shiny. There are some screen tearing and I have noticed minor texture pop up/pop in. But all in all, the game looks stunning.

The gameplay in Arkham Asylum is divided into three main portions: hand to hand combat. Stealth, platforming and exploration. The battle system in Arkham Asylum reminds me of two different battle systems, the first battle system is in Fable2 and the second is in Assasin Creed. While the fighting system in Fable 2 is based on pressing three buttons (Attack, Magic, Evade), in Arkham Asylum it’s based on pressing four buttons (Attack, Stunt, Evade, Counter). I think the developers of Arkham Asylum wanted to create an accessible battle system with a lot of depth like the one in Fable 2. I think they succeeded. Giving the fact that they have added the counter button (which does work like the one in Assasin Creed) to the mix, I can tell you they have created a battle system that is easy to use but hard to master. If you managed to link massive combos together, you will grant yourself the ability to do a one hit-kill moves such as takedowns or throwing your opponents.

The stealth portion force you to be sneaky and to move Batman from a gargoyle to another. You have to wait for the perfect moment to disarm your opponents by performing silent takedowns and glide kicks. I have noticed that the A.I behavior doesn’t act right every time, sometimes you will find them searching in a very strange manner.

Regarding Platforming and exploration, I found these parts to be very enjoyable. As you will use some cool gadgets such as Bat Claw (act like a grappling hook) and the Line Launcher which will give you the ability to move Batman from point A to B.

There are some cool gadgets that worth to be mentioned, Explosive Gel which will give you the ability to blow up walls and other surfaces and a hacking device called the Sequencer which will help you in opening security doors.

The story in this game is well-told, and it’s sparkling with details. Batman will meet some old friends such as Harly Quinn, Poison Ivy and Scarecrow. You can dive into their stories by unlocking each character bios. Some of these characters don’t have audio logs (Interviews in the game). I found myself enjoying their stories more than the main story of the game.

I have to mention the great presentation of the game. The voice acting is top notch and the soundtrack is epic and it really suits what happens exactly at the screen.

It takes me about ten hours to finish the game, and I loved every part of it. After completing the main story of the game, you can return to the game to do all of the riddle’s challenges. If you have done all of that, you can start playing the challenge mode.

Regardless if you are a fan of Batman or not, I recommend this game for the fans of the action-adventure genre. Rocksteady has done a very good job in capturing the atmosphere of the Batman universe and delivered one heck of a game to play. Buy it!!!
