Top 5 Dreamcast sequels we want to see this generation

Posted by Bawaleez On September - 9 - 2009

Dreamcast fans all over the world can Celebrate the 10th anniversary for their beloved console (US 9/9/1999), and here at VGarabia.com we will also celebrate this event with our most wanted DC’s sequels on current generation consoles.

The Dreamcast is one of the most popular gaming consoles ever, and despite the short console lifespan of about 2 years no one can argue the fact that the Dreamcast was racked up with such an impressive software lineup many of which still stand the test of time today, and While a good deal of the most popular games have transitioned over to newer consoles like the PS2 and the original Xbox, there are still a surprising amount of quality titles that never had sequels on current generation consoles.

There are a few games like Soul Calibur and Crazy Taxi that have had sequels that are pretty much the same game (or better) , but I couldn’t snub the original as it is an all-time favorite and thats why I included some of them on this list.

5 – Crazy Taxi 4

Developed by Hitmaker and published by Sega. Crazy Taxi remains a fan-favorite nearly 10 years after its 1999 arcade release, featuring a San Francisco-inspired city. where the player assumes the role of one of a few taxi drivers, trying to cart patrons around the city. With a soundtrack from The Offspring and Bad Religion, you probably still have the lyrics stuck in your head, “It’s all I want! It’s all I waaaaaaant!”

The critical performance of the game varied from high scores to low ones and it was nearly transitioned to every newer console after the Dreamcast until we reached the current generation of consoles where we are still waiting how to see the game can run on HD consoles, the original Crazy Taxi really managed to shine and had both critical and sales success first when it was published by Sega for the Dreamcast and even a year after when it was published for the PS2 by Acclaim Entertainment.

Crazy Taxi revives classic memories for all Dreamcast lovers and if we will ever have a “Crazy Taxi 4″ then it will be fundamentally based around online play, which certainly suits the nature of the series.

4 – Power stone 3

PowerStone 3 vgarabia

Power Stone was initially released on the Sega NAOMI hardware and later ported to the Dreamcast. In February 2006 Capcom ported the entire series to the PSP with a few enhancements.

The game was nothing but a master peace for all local multiplayer gaming fans, the game benefited from the four built-in controllers ports in the Dreamcast and provided an exceptional fun loaded gameplay experience, select your character then proceed to battle the other characters mixing the ability of using special attacks as well as pick up and fight with such objects as tables, chairs, rocks and bombs.

Capcom don’t even need a solid story to release a sequel and they can never find a better infrastructure than what the XBL and PSN can offer to improve and expand power stone experience, I can imagine how much fun we can get battling with 15 player -or maybe much more- instead of 4 players on the same screen!

3 – Jet Grind Radio

Jet Grind Radio was announced at the Tokyo Game Show in 1999 and generated a prodigious amount of press attention due to its use of the then revolutionary rendering technique, cel-shading. Now commonplace in game design, cel-shading allows for a “cartoon-like” appearance of 3D rendered objects.Jet Set Radio was released in Japan on June 29, 2000.

At Comic-Con last year the SEGA was rumored to be planning on bringing back Jet Grind Radio, but we end up with nothing at last!

After outings on the Dreamcast and Xbox, we haven’t seen anything of the futuristic inline-skater since 2003′s Jet Grind Radio for the Game Boy Advance and Now I think it will wonderful if we could get a sequel to Sega’s masterpiece, but don’t you agree with me that even a new Jet Grind Radio port with online tag sharing, widescreen display and HD graphics would be awesome!

2 – Skies of Arcadia 2

skies of arcadia 2 VGarabia

Skies Of Arcadia is one of the best JRPG on Dreamcast and one of the best JRPG ever, the game had an exceptional critical success at that time.

The game’s story focuses around Vyse, a young pirate in a Jules Verne-inspired fantasy world, and his friends as they attempt to stop the Valuan Empire from reviving ancient weapons with the potential to destroy the world, a wonderful story alongside a unique Battle system consisting of Character and Ships combat, the game still have so much to offer and the JRPG fans are really in need of such games.

By delivering a good story and improving the battle system, it will be a success. Just imagine all of the gunship battles featured in the original game in HD graphics.

1 – Shenmue 3

shenmue 3 vgarabia

An adventure game developed by Sega-AM2, produced and directed by Yu Suzuki. Suzuki coined a genre title, “FREE” (Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment), for the game, based on the interactivity and freedom he wanted to give to the player. Suzuki

Shenmue borrows gameplay from many different genres, but largely consists of open-world adventure segments with real-time 3D battles interspersed throughout. Shenmue was followed by a sequel, Shenmue II, with at least one more planned as a Dreamcast killer app series, although production on the series ended with the second game, leaving the story at an unresolved cliffhanger as one the most Controversial decisions in the gaming history.

Years had passed and it was still not enough to let all shenmue’s loyal fans -me included- to give up the hope of helping Ryo to gain revenge for the murder of his father from Lan Di and they will probably be more than happy to see him dieing on HD screens.
