One of the best games that is out there for sandbox games i would say would be Minecraft because there truly is no limit to how long you can play it for. Also it has probably the biggest following in the game world, and it hasn’t come out yet.

just cause 2 is one of the best open world games I’ve ever played. Why wasn’t it on the list? Mafia II was a disappointment due to the fact that it does not give you much reason to explore the beautiful open world, lack of side missions and hidden objects. also most of the missions are inside making them feel like playing a level based game. back to just cause 2 its a must have for games that enjoy a good sandbox game because of the massive open world, the more than 300 places to discover, 300 hidden objects to find, and a grapple hook that lets tether two things together, ( like a person to a gas tank the when you shoot it it takes off ) also more than 100 vehicles to drive including a hot air balloon and a flying rocket. I have 68 hrs played and only have it 72% complete.

no where has any1 mentioned the Saint’s Row series, i’ve heard there is a third coming at somepoint, and the SR2 was awesome, lots of customization

I’m anticipating Red Dead Redemption the most (partly because it’s not light-years from release). I’ve read RDR will boast an open world environment which will dwarf GTA IV’s Liberty city. The idea of seasons and weather changes appeals to my sensibilities too.

I’m also eager to jump into Mafia II whilst hoping the missions aren’t too linear and roaming doesn’t prove dull, with little to do. And of course GTA 5.

With any luck, sandbox/open world games are on the rise. GTA IV was a real ‘coming of age’ for console gaming in my experience and personally I find 3 ingredients (actually, make that 4) that really define a good game:
- the freedom to roam
- custom character generation (appearance, clothes etc)
- the setting (ie. somewhere that appeals)
- and the 4th? playing through a well constructed story that allows for variables in player choices

Anyway, enough waffle: MORE SANDBOX / OPEN WORLDS PLEASE
