Bayonetta puts every other action game to shame

Posted by Ahmad Dajani On December - 6 - 2009

Since platinum games (previously known as Clover studious) struck a deal with Sega to make three new titles for the current generation of consoles, and I have been following them closely to know what exactly the developers behind some of the most creative titles in recent memory are up to. Kamiya, the creator of the original Devil May Cry has promised that Bayonetta will redefine the action-beat em up genre. At that time, when he made this promise, I actually believed that he can do it. That’s because of two simple reasons: All of his games are of high quality and who will be more qualified in redefining this genre other than who has started it in the first place?

From now on, when you talk about the best combat system in an action-beat em up game, you have to forget about God of War, Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry and every other game; that’s because Bayonetta actually has the most responsive, enjoyable, varied and frantic battle system around and I will explain why after the jump.

Bayonetta-11

The flexibility of the system and how it gives the player the ability to perform attack moves in various ways is absolutely magical. You can go from light attacks to heavy ones to gun attacks seamlessly without breaking the combo. Unlike most of all action beat em up games, nearly every move in Bayonetta can be jump canceled, but Bayonetta does one better: in many cases, the jump comes out without canceling the attack. The ability to evade and attack simultaneously means that your offensive momentum doesn’t have to stop for anything.

Almost every move can be charged. Also, you can go from a light attack to charged attack easily just by holding a button, which actually adds a lot of strategy to the whole system. You will be asking yourself: Should I start the combo with heavy attacks, then finish the combo with lightning fast moves? Or should I start it with gun attacks and move on to fast moves and finish it with super charged move? The options and flexibility in Bayonetta combat feels limitless.

Bayonetta also has the richest list of moves in an action-beat em up game thus far. The list of moves go on and on. Every now and then, you will discover a new move that helps you in your battles against the game’s enemies. The game also has some very well animated finishing moves (Torture Moves) that can be triggered whenever the purple meter is filled. Another strategic element in the combat is “Witch Time”, which activates when the player makes a well-timed dodge to an attack. This temporarily slows time to allow Bayonetta to inflict massive amounts of counter damage before the enemies can react. Using enemies weapons also adds an extra layer to the combat and make the whole game more varied and dynamic.

Bayonetta-22

Ninja Gaiden 2 (or Sigma 2) comes close but doesn’t has the flexibility of Bayonetta, God of War 3 (yes, I have played the demo) is a button masher when compared to Bayonetta, and Devil May Cry 4 lacks the variety of moves found in Bayonetta. Kamiya has raised the bar, redefined the genre and made every other action game feels old and repetitive. Give the demo a try, you will not be disappointed. If you still want to overlook the game, it’s your loss.

I have played both demos, God of War 3 and Bayonetta. I will not be picking up Bayonetta, in fact after I died I didnt even want to continue so I shut it off. It feels like a crappy DMC rip off. I usually enjoy your articles, but after this I don’t want to read your opinioned articles or reviews. Also I really didn’t enjoy the demo in any way, I honestly thought it was stupid.

By the way, Kamiya did produce the first DMC so Bayonetta is hardly a rip off.

I have played the demos for both of Bayonetta and GOW 3, honestly the combat in GOW 3 really hasn’t impressed me that much (QTE is getting old). I’m not saying that GOW 3 is a bad game, far from it. This preview isn’t GOW 3 vs Bayonetta, this preview explains why Bayonetta actually have the best fighting system thus far. Read the preview carefully.

OMG. i forgot to tell u the enemy are the most AI i have ever seen better than MGS, L4D AND HALO. they know when to attack.

  12. Andrew Andrew Said,

I think he’s right. The combat system is leagues ahead of DMC and GoW, but due to the complexity it takes a bit of getting used to. GoW can be won entirely through button-mashing, and DMC doesn’t have nearly as many combos. Bayonetta presents a challenge, and while most games are challenging because the enemies have an unfair advantage, Bayonetta is difficult because you just don’t know how to control her as well as the AI can control themselves, if that makes sense. The key to winning this game is to master the combat system, which will take a good while. It’s also worth saying that EVERYTHING she does is cool, no matter how simple to combo, it looks awesome.

Bayonetta is being “hated upon” due to it difficulty here, and the fact that no one contests that Ninja Gaiden may be better just goes to prove that the readers here have no appreciation of true difficulty, only difficulty of the artificial sort. In GoW, the only difficulty is in the button-reaction events, and the fact that the combat system is as flexible as a brick.

I stand corrected, someone did contest it using NG. In my opinion, NG is a bit TOO hard. This is good if it’s what you like, but most people don’t. Bayonetta leads you into the difficulty, it more than likely won’t ever be EASY, but it won’t be unmercifully difficult.

Bayonetta is more forgiving than God Of War since it has modes that
allows newcomers to do fantastic combos with minimal effort.
I think both GOW and DMC fans will like the game.
GOW is mass appealing due to its simplistic nature and that is its draw point.
Bayonetta has a more complex and fluid combat system which is more suited
for people who like japanese hack and slash games.
Saying that Bayonetta is THE best action game is hypocritical and very opinion based.

  16. Emery Emery Said,

I’ve never heard God of War praised for it’s combat system. It’s mainly loved because of the presentation, the way the QTE’s work and the general look of it. The best thing they did was fix the camera instead of sticking gamers with a busted mobile camera.

Generally the big clash in terms of gameplay is between DMC3 and Ninja Gaiden.
DMC 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 are usually considered inferior to thweir prior games.

Ninja Gaiden is considered to be the most ambititious but it is kind of broken allowing you to plow through the game usuing Flying Swallow.
DMC3 is considered to be hard probably the best mix ever.

God of War is considered to be simplistic and easy to play and noob friendly. It is kind of in the middle in terms of complexity of the fightign system.

BloodRayne, BR2, Gladiator, Otogi, Otogi 2, Conan, and Heavenly Sword are considered to be at the junk end of the genre. That doesn’t make them bad just less challenging to learn and play.

Then you also have several similar games that are really closer to being Dynasty Warriors Clones than Onimusha-derivatives because they alternate between throwing hordes of really weak junk opponents at you and then maybe toss you a boss every now and then. (In stead of having you fight five to eight medium opponents and alternate with platforming hazards and big, often recurring bosses..

You people need help. God of War is the biggest button masher ever!! No matter the enemy, or its size you cant square square triangle over and over and beat the game. I know, I experimented by doing it in part 2. Bayonetta has a stupid amount of moves to perform, I only have the demo at the moment but every time I play it I find something new. Sure GoW will win in sales, but you have to give Bayonetta its due.

Also I love the GoW series. I have played all of them and love the story and gameplay. But compared to the likes of Bayonetta or Ninja Gaiden, Kratos is a button masher…plain and simple.

i first got a chance to play both the bayonetta and god of war demos at the san dirego comic con last summer, and i knew right away Bayonetta was the better game. I love god of war, but its a very simple action game, and gow3 really doesnt do much different then the previous games, its just gow2 in high def really. bayonetta on the other hand is just blatantly fresh and original. its complex yet easy to play. its flashy yet easy to follow. its just the closest thing ive ever played to a perfect action game. not only that, but fuck is bayonetta hot, lmao.

its a shame your article’s comment section has been over run by stupid fanboys who attack your opinion just because you prefer a multiplat over a ps3 exclusive. i mean theres no possible way god of war couldnt be the best action game ever, amirite? fools. i mean dont get me wrong, god of war is a very fun game and i plan on buying it. i just think bayonetta is better, and any foolish fanboy who refuses to even give bayonetta an honest chance is just an idiot. they diserve to miss out on this amazing game.

I see that you’re trying to say Bayonetta has a better combat system, however I am saying I Stronly disagree, and to say it puts God of War 3 to shame is a joke. First of all God of War 3 is going to be epic, end of story. I had no feeling of awsomeness while playing the Bayonetta demo, in fact it felt like every other action game(that isn’t GoW) with some random huge monster shaking things about. The combat system was on par with DMC, and the specials are just stupid. She uses her hair? Come on. The premise is ridiculous. I will buy Dante’s Inferno before I buy this, and I havent even tried it.

  26. Andrew Andrew Said,

Can we really not accept that GoW is a button-masher? I’ve gone through the game with entirely square-square-triangle. It isn’t that difficult. The reason comments are being voted down is because these people cannot stand to see Kratos dethroned. The issue is that Kratos will NOT be dethroned, The games ( while similar ) are in different genres in my mind. Bayonetta fits into an eastern hack-n-slash, and GoW belongs to the western ones. They’re different in many ways, but not ways that are entirely obvious. I prefer the eastern ones, but many prefer the western. God of War is an easy game, and that’s just how it is. I don’t see any point in arguing this. If you WANT to incorporate the potential complexity in its battle system, you may, but there is never any need to. Bayonetta REQUIRES that you look deeper into the battle system and pay attention to what you do. The dodges aren’t as easy as they may seem, and not every battle is won with witch-time, when fighting Jeanne, you cannot use witch time at all. It’s a tense battle, and until you learn to control Bayonetta properly you will die every time! You simply cannot say the same about Kratos.

Does this make his game any less enjoyable? No! Of course not!
Does this make his game inferior? No!
It does, however, make his game less appealing to those who game because the love to game. Bayonetta is a game for the true gaming crowd, not the gamers who only game because they enjoy Halo, Gears, or CoD. Not for those who have a system because they like casual games, Bayonetta is for those of us gamers who have been at it since we were young, and enjoy real games. Argue as much as you like, but I have a feeling that you know what I’m talking about.

GOW 3 will be Epic, no doubt about it. I’m a huge fan of the series (I have played all of the three games in the series multiple times) and GOW 3 is one of my most anticipated games this generation. Also, I’m pretty sure that GOW 3 will do things like puzzle solving and platforming in a better way than Bayonetta, but when it comes to the battle system, you have to know that Bayonetta battle system is leaps and bounds over any game now. GOW 3 demo actually has given us some indications regarding the battle system, while enjoyable, it’s not up to Bayonetta’s battle system.

Fags cant seem to read, the genre has been redefinied because of how deep the combat system is in Bayonetta, when compared to GOW (mashmashmash, *button to rip enemies heads off…again*) the problem with GOW is it’s not evolving, since GOW1 the game play hasn’t evolved not even a bit. All I see for gow3 is prettier graphics.

Played the demo’s Bayonetta’s heaps better, fuckin scrubs think GOW’s hard on hardest mode? lol you sony fags need to develop some skills, as for NG2 it was a whoreable letdown, NG Black or 1 however? that’s more like it, Bayonetta> NGB> GOW3.

    AHMED YOU READ THIS LOL,

It was actually a nice read,

but please nigga please!!!! putting ninja gaiden in that mix is just wrong you can’t justify that. you need to take it back lol….

you reasoning says “button mashing = less game quality” you raise up Bayonetta and put down the rest because of that and other factors…let me tell you something, you have NEVER played Ninja Gaiden (not talking about the second) any previous NG game would never let you kill any enemy on any difficulty if you were hitting buttons. and if you did you were lucky and if you played the game enough you would understand why.

the AI in that game is so brutal they don’t care that you are 1 guy against 100 they have and WILL go all out on you. you mash buttons you DIE. you don’t evade you DIE, you don’t right time you DIE. and evading doesn’t take a hit of a button to do it. timing doesn’t take a hit of a button to do it, you need to calculate everything.

so it’s not just you have to know what you push to win, it’s why, when, where, and on who and how many… it’s very complicated am sorry i played the asian Bayonetta and all i can say there is alot going on, on the screen it is really hard to time anything it’s just too much so i have to mash my way through. and hope to get a break while evading, and couldn’t complete the game because it has a LOT of japanese cliches my stomach can’t take.

am sure that you never played NG. never maybe you tried it but never actually went deep, i’ll tell you what i’ll give Bayonetta another chance you give NG another chance best of all is the NG Sigma. (you can go to youtube to know that you master this game you are a ninja in real life lol)

again please not NG anything else am fine with but not that game it is the difference between hardcore gamers and casual gamers. it draws the line between games you play for fun and games you play to concur and feel that you DID an amazing work concurring it.

You can praise the move list, but at the end of the day Bayonetta still came off feeling like a DMC clone with a different skin & moveset. It was fun… but I’ve gone through the GOWIII demo 5 times now… and haven’t even felt the need to go back through the Bayonetta demo a 2nd time yet. It probably won’t be worth more than a rental.

Also, I have never ever mentioned in this preview that Ninja Gaiden 2 is a button masher!!!!

first of all, i’m a sony fanboy, but i have always been opened to other consoles, i don’t hate bayonetta or anything, i played the demo enjoyed it, but that’s it didn’t feel like a revolution or anything, more like dmc4, even the design looked the same, and kamiya wasn’t supposed to be involved in dmc4, i think the best dmc is the first one and i think bayonetta is just the same but with more combos, ng was a very difficult game, i could never get past mission 9 in master but compared to bayonetta i think ng is way better, there was so much hype around this game and even though i think kamiya is one of the best, this game is just average, and gow3, well i wasn’t excited about this game before the demo, but after the demo i was just… wow!, indeed i don’t think that the gameplay is that complex but it was really hard in god and titan, i’ll probably buy or at least rent this game, but imho i think gow is going to be better in general.

  57. GuyWithAngryOpinions GuyWithAngryOpinions Said,

About your article and NG’s comments :

You know I am getting sick of ninja gaiden mechanics. They are awesome but if you are to spent 6hours in a chapter or a boss at master ninja difficulty this isn’t fun anymore.

In the end no matter the combos and the plethora of amazing moves you end up using 2 to 3 specific attacks, spam Ultimate Techniques and follow the same strategy for the majority of the game or else you will DIE. There’s very little space for errors or 200hitcombos when in every corner lurks death.

Now about Bayonetta combat system. All those that you describe sounds amazing, and judging from the demo they are very unique and refreshing gameplay elements but there’s must be a balance in difficulty. If you can spam all those techniques while your enemies standing like drunken fools all that magic is gone and no matter the complexity or the depth of the system it ends up like another button smasher.

Gow gameplay is very simple, NG’s is very strict and harsh. So where Bayonetta will stand? The question is, will Bayonetta use correctly that system or it will be just another button masher with slow time?
It’s too early to tell but I hope all those amazing features aren’t just for eye candy.
Because in demo there’s too much eye candy and too much laziness from enemies.
The difficulty must be right so you can enjoy the game and utilize it’s mechanics right.

In Gow you can pretty much spam all attacks doesn’t matter, the result will be the same more or less.
In NG from the hundreds of combos and dozens of weapons and gameplay elements you will use very few.

I think Bayonetta has a complex combat scheme (a refined DMC, a mix of all those games) and a new approach to action but the design of the game is not perfect so it cannot utilize it to full extent (no block and parry?). It’s just there to be.
No game so far has found the golden line between difficulty and fun or the perfect combat system. I don’t think Bayonetta will.

Don’t get me wrong I was hyped about the game and I might end up getting it for my 360 but to say it will put GOW, NG or DMC to shame just cause it does one thing better is ridiculous.

To be honest I didn’t know that you could call Bayonettas combat system better. In fact I think its wrong to call it better or “the best”. The way I look at it, it depends on what you like, I was button mashing while I was playing Bayonetta to be honest, however I have an awesome formula with God of War. DMC is just like Bayonetta in terms of button mashing, it felt like a clone of DMC, and I know DMC because I played them all. Same with God of War, I’ve even played Chains of Olympus, and I gotta say it’s still has the best combat system. I played the Bayonetta demo again, and beat it after my last post. I felt likeDMC with a chick, and it had a QTE when fighting that boss thing. I don’t think it innovates anything, but hey, to each his own right? BTW I don’t only own 2 games(DMC & GoW) I have a bunch of others on which I base my opinion.

honestly how can you compare GOW to bayonetta?
    or ninja gaiden to bayonetta?
    there completley different games.
while your at it you might as well compare GT5 to burnout paradise since they both have cars.
or halo to wet since they both have guns.
GOW is a much slower game compared to bayonetta.
bayonetta is a button masher, you can just keep swinging at your enemies no blocking required.
try that in GOW and you will get your ass handed to you on a silver platter.
when it comes to sword fighting games in general ninja gaiden 2 is my favorite.
its nail biting hard, forcing you to learn the combos, counter attacks are imperial and dodging is very important.
    bayonetta does none of that.
bayonetta you can just go in guns blazing as they would say no technique or strategy. but, especially with ninja gaiden you cant do that.
unless you want to die a million times on the first level alone.
and this is based off playing the WHOLE game not just some 5 minute demo.

Bayonetta still has the deepest, most intuitive, best flowing combat system on the market. That combined with an abnormal amount of style and graphical power and you know your looking at a champ. Now, the God of War games have always been fun to a certain degree. This was all because of the extremely well crafted area’s and the fact that the camera showed you all the amazing sights. The combat was shallow compared to Bayonetta, and any idiot stating otherwise is truly… an idiot. GOW III is going to be a lot of fun, and a graphical monster. Once again: I love GOW, I will get it and have fun, but better graphics just does not make a game revolutionary, GOWIII feels almost the same as part I and II, and thats not bad cause’ its a heck of a formula, but Bayonetta innovates where Ninja Gaiden 2 and GOWIII just did not take it to the next level, or raise the bar for that matter. They went safe, steady or whatever you wanna call it.

You cannot compare games, each is unique, labels are stupid. But one thing is for sure DMC raised the bar on Action Games and its been like 8 or 9 years since anyone changed the formula, thats just the plain old truth man.

okay name…lil big planet and crackdown obviously will be played by two very diffrent types of audiance….but its more than fair to say the people who will play gow will also be playing bayonetta and vise versa……what does it have to be exactly the same game b4 you will allowy a comparison in your world? thats like those people saying u cant compare gta 4 and saints row 2 cuz gta 4 went for a serious tone while saints was just trying to be silly….and yes you can compare something when it fits into a same catagory….other media outlets that have played the full game have already been said to have been blown away by it….stop the hate and be a real gamer and check it out…bet youll be kicking yourself for not defending a contender for goy 2010

  81. Darrius Darrius Said,

Good games must have different formulas in order to be good otherwise they are just clones of one of another. I have not played enough DMC to comment on it. I played a little bit of DMC1 and didn’t finish it; I played a little more of DMC 4 but didn’t make it to Dante’s half. I have however, played a lot of GOW 1 & 2 and I’ve played a lot of Ninja Gaiden Black/Sigma/2, at high levels. I did play the Bayonetta Demo as well.

I judge a game by asking what does this game want to be and how good is it at being that. Ninja Gaiden wants you to be very skilled in order to beat it. It succeeds with flying colors. God of War wants to re-tell Greek mythology so that Kratos, not Aries, is the rightful God of War, it succeeds with flying colors. Bayonetta wants you to believe that Bayonetta is hot, and she is hot in a run-way fashion model type of way.

You can tell that there are a lot of combos in Bayonetta. However I agree that there are so many combos that you can mash you through the game, or at least through the demo. I’ve beaten the demo 2 or 3 times and I only know the combo that make her stomp down with the giant stiletto heel. I think its punch, punch, kick, kick. By the way, that move is not in the game by accident, nor is it is coincidence that that is the only combo I know. High-heeled shoes (on a woman) are hot.

While I probably will buy Bayonetta. It appears that it will be worse than God of War at telling a story and worse than Ninja Gaiden at producing fast and precise combat. But I suspect that Bayonetta doesn’t want to do either.

It looks like Bayonetta wants to use sex to sell. Bayonetta is always switching and licking loli-pops even in fights. There is a place for that, young men like a little bit of fan-service. Nor do they mind looking at women who have a physique so Ideal that it is impossible. Although when the girlfriend asks if you or other men like games like this, that is woman-speak for,……….. “I can never look as perfect as the cartoon-woman in that video game, neither can any other woman for that matter. Please tell me that you can see through that fantasy and prefer a real woman”…………….. If the character Bayonetta was a man and not a woman, she would never say anything.

  82. name name Said,

a game has to play and feel the same to be compared.
    like infamous and prototype.
    or prototype and crackdown.
or bayonetta and devil may cry 4.
the combat in god of war is completley different to the combat in bayonetta.
both use swords, both have magic BUT the speed of the game, the feel of the game is completley different.
im not saying bayonetta is a bad game, its not, its better than DMC4 and that was my favorite game of 08.
but what edge said is a load of utter CRAP! bayonetta in no way, shape, or form has better combat than GOW.
    you cant compare the 2.
and even if you could GOW is still much much much more fun.
as i said before GOW attacks are widespread wreaking havoc in large areas to many enemies, bayonetta is much more fast paced and focused on 1 enemy.
GOW is like surgery with a chainsaw.
bayonetta is like surgery with a scalpel.
and ninja gaiden is like surgery with a high precision laser.
    completley different games.
