Major Nelson: Natal won’t replace the Xbox 360 controller

Posted by Ahmad Dajani On December - 31 - 2009

Project Natal is getting a lot of attention lately. Especially with the rise of the two videos that supposedly showing Geometry Wars and Half Life 2 being played using Microsoft upcoming controller free peripheral. But what the truth about those videos? Can we play FPS games using Natal? It seems that Xbox Live’s director of programming has the answers to these questions.

Speaking to Kotaku radio, one of the callers asked Major Nelson if Project Natal has the potential to translate the experience of playing FPS games solely using the device. He answered:

” ……I love Xbox 360 controller, It’s one of the finest controllers that ever made for a console. Now when we look at something like FPS, I think you and I can both agree that if we were playing Call of Duty or any type of FPS, you don’t really want to run around to the back of your couch for cover. That isn’t fun. You may haven’t a couch to do it, or you may haven’t room to do it. With Natal, we want to bring new gaming experiences to the living room. So, we already got the first person Shooters in the way to play those pretty well. Is Natal going to add something to that? Possibly. But, I don’t, we get a situation where the Natal will replace the entire thing.”

When the host of Kotaku radio asked him if he has seen the two videos that supposedly showing the games being played using Natal, he answered ” No. I haven’t seen them”. Then he asked him if we will be playing Geometry Wars using Natal? He answered ” I don’t know”.

So you have it now. Project Natal is all about new gaming experiences, and it won’t replace the Xbox 360 controller. What do you think?

Of course it wouldn’t replace the controller. From what has been shown so far, Natal is strongly centered on the casual base. You can’t really have any hard-core experiences from it – at least, so far. If it got rid of the controller Microsoft would lost a huge amount of customers.

So a game like Command & Conquer isn’t hardcore to you? To me RTS are very hardcore4 and NATAL would bring new elements into that genre. What we don’t want is a bunch of crap that centered on NATAL and not the games like so many Wii titles.

I can’t wait to see what they come up with an I imagine Rare will come out with Killer Instinct on it to start things off and Fable 3 will have something incorporated as well.

Maybe instead of all the experts commenting here who already seem to have all the answers we can wait and see if the hype is worth it. Talking trash about Microsoft is not a problem for most people, but what makes it really fun is when you have an actual reason to give them a hard time.

first off ppl who say that they got both systems are probably lying but who can blame them they just add words before they say crap about the other console so that ppl will agree natal is gonna be crap the eye toy is the same crap…wii will be dominating both systems why? because the simple fact that its a family console and its cheaper…natal i believe will have some gay shit like playboy where you fantasize about doing some chick or dudes for 360 owners or like major faggot

  13. avatar Project Natal Won’t Replace the XBOX 360 Controller: Major Nelson Said,

[...] So there we have it; it appears that Natal and the Xbox 360 controller we know and love (except in games such as Street Fighter) will likely find a way to coexist with separate game types. However, it does leave one to wonder what sorts of “new” experiences they have planned for the “core” gamers, as they’ve spoken of before. source: VG Arabia [...]

  14. avatar bob Said,

I personally think natal will open up many possibilities in gaming like head tracking to give the illusion of 3d for us people who don’t have nice 3d capable tvs. I don’t think that natal and the 360 controller have to be separate they can be used together to create an engrossing experience
