Halo: Reach will outsell GOW 3
I’m not a big fan of Halo games, in fact, none of them are in my top 10 favorite games of all time. But there is one fact you must deal with: Halo games are some of the biggest selling games in the past few years. The only franchise that can compete with it or beat its sales nowadays is Call of Duty. Killzone 2 was an excellent game, but it had failed to capture a fraction of Halo success. Even the best game of 2009, the incredible Uncharted 2 had failed to approach Halo 3: ODST sales numbers which wasn’t even a full-blown Halo sequel.
At the same time, God of War games are some of my all time favorites. But they didn’t sell as good as Halo or Metal Gear Solid games. I’m a huge MGS and GOW fan and I will always support those franchises. If I have to choose between Reach and GOW3, even if they are of different genres and for different audiences, I will choose GOW3 over Reach, because I’m a big fan.
But can we be realistic for a moment here? Halo games are way more popular than GOW games. The biggest selling GOW was the first one, which had managed to sell over 3 million copies while Halo 3 the best selling game in the series has sold over 10 million copies and it won’t stop until Reach arrives this year. So for the people who are saying that GOW3 is Microsoft’s new nightmare, I think you have to reconsider your thinking because it’s the exact opposite. Using simple logic, it seems that Halo: Reach will be the best selling game of 2010. Also, I think that Sony is more frightened of Halo: Reach than Microsoft of GOW3 because at the end of the day, sales numbers determine which company is winning the war.
The next thing I want to talk about is the Uncharted 2 vs God of War 3 graphics argument. I have played the GOW3 demo, the game looks great, but not jaw dropping. The recently released scans are awesome, but please tell me how you can judge the quality of the visuals by just looking at the scans? Give me new HD screens taken from the game or give me a new trailer, then we can talk. Also, from what I have seen from the demo, GOW3 needs a lot of work to even reach Uncharted 2 visuals. One more point I want to make it clear is great visuals don’t always make the game sell better. Visually impressive games such as Killzone 2 and forza 3 aren’t selling as good as a 2D Super Mario game for the Wii. There are more important factors than just visuals such as franchise popularity.
Overhyping a game while not meeting expectations will absolutely affect the game sales in the long run in a bad way. Just look at GTA4; the game is great, but it was overhyped and it has had suffered from it. A lot of great games have had suffered from the overhyping effect. So be careful for GOW3.
I think that my points are clear now. Be realistic and thanks for reading.

From the first paragraph I knew I could not take this article seriously. Its the same thing that I always see when comparing PS3 and 360 games. The sales. All you talk about in your intro is how Halo sells better then any other PS game, and why that makes it the best. I mean you just said that the only franchise that can compete with Halo is COD? Are you fucking serious? I think its clear that you have not been playing games for as long as some of us and have really missed out on all the great franchises from the past if you think that the only franchise that can top Halo is COD. I swear these FPS are ruining the gaming industry. Is casual people like the author here who determine a game by sales and not by quality.

Javier, Sony cares about it’s core fanbase. That’s why all of it’s first party studios put out awesome AAA games that are meant for true gamers, not a soccer mom who has 5 minutes to do something. And if Sony wanted Wii Sports, they would have made a crappy console that couldn’t even play DVD’s. That’s why Sony invested so much into a HD console.

I honestly love the Halo series as well and there overall good games but there really not all there hyped to be, I have never had my jaw dropped playing a Halo game and Im sure many can say the same the GOW series on the other hand I have been amazed by on many fronts. I also wanted to mention that Sony 1st party publishers share techniques internally so if the Santa Monica and Naughty Dog Guys are talking, who knows what’s possible. The Demo they showed @ e3 was probably old so think the difference b/w the GOW3 Demo and the final product, like comparing UC1 to UC2. ITS GOING TO BE RIDICULUS.

i usually dont call out fanboys, but the title speaks for itself. idc about halo, halo is a old gen game, way back to the first xbox. i admit halo will sale way more copies than GoW3, y cant u xbox fanboys admit halo sucks or at least admit its the same halo that is put out everytime. overall, i dont care if halo sales more, i expect it to sell more, but as a gamer, id choose GoW3 over Halo anyday, id even choose Kingdom Hearts, and KZ2, id even choose Gears of War over Halo. and Mass Effect 2 is an obvious way better choice than any Halo game. as a company, of course people would want the game that sales more copies. but not everyone is a game company, but the entire world is a gamer. and as a gamer, id prefer the better game, or the game that suits me. you writing this article was pointless. everyone already knows anyways. its like youre playing football and your friend breaks his leg, and you say to ur friend “ur not going be able to walk right”

I agree that Reach will sell a lot more than GOW 3 just cause of the popularity, although GOW games are pretty popular and it will depend on how Sony will market this and i’m sure they will go all out… your comment about the graphics remember its was a E3 DEMO and I dont think Sony or MS are afraid of anything if afraid they should be of Super Mario Galaxy

I’m glad some new games are being over hyped because we need a new franchise to knock Halo of its mountain. I am a PS3 owner and I would like to see Uncharted 3 come to the 360 (make the online component interact between PS3 and 360). If this happened then Halo could well be brushed aside.

Second offf i dont know where you are right now because it says your website that you are Arabian or at least you are in ARABIA, so one thing you have to now HALO franchise has only sell extremely well in USA meanwhile Sony has a franchise bigger than Halo that sells extremely better around the world and thats: “GRAN TURISMO” no to discourage you but most likely Gran Turismo 5 will sell more than Halo Reach because there is a bigger user base of PS3 in EUROPE and ASIA than xbox360 where Gran Turismo fanchises sells well meanwhile Halo franchise doesnt sells good in Europe except UK of course.
Third you can go to N4G and you can see or at least read the rumors because of the embargo, that God of War 3 new demo showed in closed doors to some gaming reports they have put out the word that the game looks better than Uncharted 2 therefore making it the consola best game ever eventhough frome a technical point of view Killzone 2 was better put lest not talk about that.
Fourth and last i see that you wouldnt be talking negative of God of War 3, because in reality you are talking bad about the game, if you have been invited by SONY to see the Demo, so meanwhile why dont you abstained from looking down a game that could achive something never done in a console frome a tecnical stand of point and artistic way.

We haven’t even seen the gameplay for Halo:Reach yet. It could be the sickest game ever. Every game has potential, just depends on which way the developers go with it. Both GOW and Halo have good stories to me, I love space and I love gore. I guess we have to wait and see.

One of many reason Halo sells so well is they have much less to choose from in terms of quality exclusives. IMO Sony’s exclusive list is way ahead of MS and I will not be buying all of them at game launch as there are simple too many awesome games to all play at once. I’ll pick up a few 6 months to a year after release date when I have finished playing U2; GT5 and maybe GOW3 if my walet allows me too.

but halo will still be the same halo as its always been same good guys/ bad guys, same gameplay same everything so it may sell more but GOD3 wil still be a better game in quality, and the only reason odst sold well is there was nothing else to buy for xbox at the time so if god3 came out and there are not any other good games for about 6 months before and after the game released it would sell so much more but there will be more of games for ps3 at the time GOD3 goes up for sale so sales will be dispersed between the different great titles FPS is not the only games people play but if u have no choice people will buy whats new and if that’s the only thing new well that’s whats going to sell.but the main thing will be the graphics not saying reach won’t look good but when it comes out sony will have something that blows it away, and the disc space shortage will either make the game look outdated or it will be extremely short cause there is not enough room to have it all. but it’ll probably be multi disc like everything else that MS has that is any good but that the only thing they can do for now.

look, the title of the article was obviously worded like it is to receive hits – and by the looks of it, it worked.
the rest of the article clearly shows that he is talking about sales figures, and its hard to disagree. Halo Reach will be the highest selling game on an individual platform next year. God of War 3 will be good, but seeing as though out of the 120 million plus PS2 install base only 5 million managed to pick up a copy of the first or second games, what makes you think that a game on a console with an install base of 1/4 of that is going to suddenly sell the 10 million that its gonna need to sell to topple Reach? you really think that 1 in every 3 people with PS3s is gonna buy God of War 3, when only 1 in every 15 or so bought their other exclusives like Killzone 2 or Uncharted 2?

God of War Sales were hampered by piracy.And that is the truth.I myself had no other options other than owning a pirated copy of God of War 1 and 2 back then in 2005 and 2007 cos they were no original games available in our country.But since i am like a biggest fan of Sony Santa Monica Studios/GoW series i purchased GOW collections on day one through play-asia

I know exactly what the author is saying in this article. He doesn’t like Halo, but it will do better sales wise cus of the fact of it is that Halo has such a big following. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait for GoW3 to come out and I can’t stand any Halo game, but more people like Halo. Sometimes you have to not be a fanboy about stuff and actually see what is written to understand. Hell, I’m a sony fanboy and I knew what the article was about. ……. well the article makes a point there are many good games out there but tot he both consoles its all about money i own both dont care about the best game but typically the best sellers mean the best no one buys shitty games…… so if we want to compare the success of consoles then its sales because games only get recognized by how many are sold, its just a fact. think about it if GOW3 sells better its the greatest game in 2010 but it wont just because there are more FPS buyers out there, its all about replay value thats where games succeed GOW3 doesnt have anything like FPS as far as online play therefore their value is 10% of what games like halo and COD are. as long as the storyline are ok they will make more money.GOW3 has a very good storyline but lets face it you’ll get bored of it and wont play it over and over like A FPS and Microsoft knows this.

Man the overhyping for games is just so cute, GOW3 is going to be a fine game and so will Reach but when you get people claiming how deep a game is when you just press X as fast as you can to tair off someones head then you need to put the controler down. I am a fan of both seris and they each have +’s and -’s. So get over yourself you PS3 fanboys. PS3 games are the masters at being overhyped. Killzone 2 was not up to par with the hype. Also do i need to bring up LAIR, hevanly sword, and HAZE. OF course Xbox has the abortion known as Too human. But the 360 fan base expected it to suck. And U2 was just the sleeper hit sony really needed. If sony knew it was going to be decent game then they would have been advertising the hell out of it. And GT5 is the lamest excuss for a game for everybody. I understand that some people love racing games but its just the same thing over and over, Press the trigger to go fast and turn left or right. If you read this before reading the article, please return to N4G. Halo may well we a good game but sales aren’t the ‘be all and end all’. For instance, Final Fantasy has been released only on the PS3 in Japan and on both consoles elsewhere, does that mean it will sell poorly on the 360 in Japan? Terrible article

A decent write, but I’ll have to disagree with you on one point. Sales dont matter. Call it Ps3 fanboy talk, I dont care. If so, then games such as Ico, Shadow of the Colossus or Indigo Prophecy would be considered failures when infact they are considered masterpieces. I also think people need to stop overhyping God of War 3 and accept the game as the developers see it not as you wish it to be. If you would like God of War to be specifically what you hope a game should be, develop your own.

I will say it again, the point behind this article is to clarify that Halo: Reach will sell more than any other exclusive this year. And I know that sales don’t equal quality, I already clarified this in the article.

halo has a wide range in its audience age group, hell i have even played against 8 yrs old girls even though it is an M rated game, i think that contributed tremendously to its successful sale figures

People here blame the author for comparing these two game franchises based on sales. Well, based on what else do you wish to compare them?
Average review score perhaps? Because Halo games top God of War games in their average review score as well.
Feature set? Because it’s a no-brainer here as well: GOW is a single player game. Halo has a single player campaign, fully featured 4 person online co-op and 2 person split screen co-op, online and offline multiplayer components, video mode, photo features, interactive level editing and rules editing tools… replay value is of the chart here.
Story? It’s a matter of taste, but both stories are about over-the-top heroes in a battle of epic proportions. But Halo’s story is mostly original where GOW’s story is a mash-up of greek mythology stories.
Gameplay? both are on the top of their respective genres and tweaked their gameplay to the max. Nothing to argue here.
Graphics? From the latest trailers it seems that both look gorgeous, but do not surpass Uncharted 2 which is currently the king.

So Sony are scared of microsoft because Reach will sell more? What’s reach going to do to them? Detract from the PS3 fanbase? “AT” the end of the day, no one is the other’s nightmare, both companies just want their console to do their best. Sony isn’t going to lose any money out of Reach selling games, so what should they be scared of then?
Sales determine the winner of what? Which game sells more? Well done, glad you figured that out- as you said, simple logic. Or do sales determine which is a better game? No, they don’t. So i’m not sure what you were trying to say there, and I don’t think you know either,

Yes because ODST was such a quality game, wasn’t it? Look at that Metacritic score……..that’s just awesome!!! LOL, ODST was a crap game, Halo: Reach will be a crap game as well.
Also, as soon as this argument turned to sales i knew right away that the author of this article doesn’t follow the games industry very closely at all. Yes, the Halo franchise has sold more than the GOW franchise but saying it will be the best – selling game of the year? WTF have you been smoking? You want to talk about sales figures? Here’s some fun facts, the GT franchise (See – Gran Turismo 5) has sold more than double the amount of games the Halo franchise has, the last full GT game (GT 4) sold more than 12 million units – figures a second – rate title like Halo could only dream of. GT 3 sold 15 million units, no Halo game will ever accomplish that because the quality just isn’t there.
You want to know why Forza 3 was rushed out last year? Because Microsoft were scared of releasing their racing franchise in the same YEAR as Gran Turismo, not the same month or the same quarter but Microsoft were too afraid to launch Forza in the same year as GT, because they knew what would happen. Gran Turismo 5 will own 2010……….stop hyping up a garbage FPS that will be no better than ODST in terms of sales OR scores.
Oh yeah and next time you want to talk about sales success, at least research the videogames industry first.

I am so sick of people popping into an article, calling it fanboy and saying they can’t even read it because they say a game is better because of sales. Man, a whole lot of people made themselves look like idiots in these comments because they didn’t even read what the guy was saying – he’s not saying that Halo is the best game coming out, or that COD is the only franchise that is as good as Halo, he’s saying that the companies only measure a game by the amount it sells, and Halo will blow GoW3 out of the water when it comes to sales, so Sony is afraid of MS, not the other way around. The more and more I read comments to game discussion blogs the more I think that gamers are retarded…or 3…All people seem to do is read the title and post without reading what the author says. He could be saying that GOWIII is the best game ever and all should love it (Which he actually says in the first paragraph if anyone was reading it)
The author was simply pointed out what is a proven fact in that the Halo series sells better than the other major console franchise games. He is not saying that makes any of the Halo games better games, infact he keeps reminding the readers in his blog that that is not what he is saying.
Now I don’t know if anyone remembers anything well but Microsoft had an entire block of New York City closed for the release day of Halo 3. AGAIN THIS DOES NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT ACTUAL GAMEPLAY, if you want game play critiques of all these games go to the various sites such as gamesradar or magazines etc. So…fanboys try reading past the title and offer some better comments

Some of the points in this article are valid. Halo Reach will sell more than God Of War 3. The big difference is that the people buying Halo Reach will already be Halo fans that own a 360 but God Of War 3 will sell consoles for Sony which is what they really need.
Gran Turismo 5 is the same thing. It may not be the be all and end all that it used to be but when it finally (if ever) makes it onto the shelf it will shift consoles.
As for the statement about COD being the only franchise to compete with Halo in terms of Sales, well that’s mince. Modern Warfare 2 and GTA IV both outsold Halo 3 by a number of million units (ok that’s across multiple platforms but if we’re talking sales here it’s still the facts).

Oh and to add to the comment about Sony being more afraid of Halo Reach than the other way around. I agree that there’s probably no fear in either direction but as stated above God Of War 3 is what Sony need because it will shift hardware units.
If they want to close the gap to the 360 this is what Sony needs – console sellers.

I agree that Reach will sell more than GOWIII , that’s one thing I’d actually bet money on! Hopefully GodofWarIII will move units like no other PS3 game and hopefully it will amazing people. None-the-less the Halo name is more well known most other major franchises this gen, and with the install base of the 360 it’d be stupid to believe that anything else besides FFXIII (on both consoles combined) will sell more than Halo:Reach! But it’s not like anyone should even worry about this because I’m sure both will be great games and I will play them and love them both for that reason!

Okay, two points i personally disagree with.
1. The Halo thing. I really don’t see it owning up this year, i mean wasn’t ODST mean’t to last year? I think a lot of people are getting a bit sick of the franchise, they’re really have to pull something big out of the bag to get it going.
2. How did GTA4 get affected in any sense of the word from a sales perspective? In its first week it broke a fucking record taking of 39 million pounds in its first week. IN THE UK ALONE. God knows what it was like for the rest of the world. Goes to show that hype isn’t always a bad thing, if people are sure a game isn’t gonna let them down then they’ll go out and get it. No questions asked, just like how i will with GoW3.

Do you know why Halo games sell in 360? ‘coz it’s the only game in the 360 that is worth getting. And Americans are FPS whores. True that Halo:ODST sold more than U2 but it didn’t move hardware. Reach will just be the same, it’ll sell millions but won’t move hardware. The only people that will be buying reach are old Halo players be there won’t be new players for it.

you dont even own a 360, so how would you know if Halo 3:ODST is good or not? its a very good game. not game of the year worthy, but very good.
as for your little sales spiel about the GT series – youre forgetting a VERY big factor: install base.
Halo 3 had sold 10 million copies when the 360s install base was at ~35 million. thats nearly 1 in every 3 360 owners bought Halo 3. when GT3 sold 12 million, the PS3s install base was up over 50 million iirc, and substantially over that as well. GT4 sold about 10 million, but at the time it did that the PS2s install base was pushing 100 million. that means for GT4, the attach rate was still only something like 1 in 10 PS2 owners.
Forza 3 was released because it was ready, because Turn 10 dont need 6 years to make a game. it was released to overwhelmingly unanimous critical reception, with the only sites having anything bad to say about it being ones that you, a ps3 fanboy, would frequent as they have the word sony/ps3/playstation/play in the title.
GT5 is just beyond a joke now. this new delay was probably because they saw how poorly the demo was received and how well forza 3 was, and thought ‘we better fix this up’.

And as to your other point on ODST being a good game. I’m still searching for a 360 fanboy I personally know to tell me that. Moreover, with the level that gaming is at now, if you dont publish a game of the year worthy title, then you really failed.

why do people assume that God of War 3 is a ‘system seller’?
the original God of War and God of War 2 have only managed to sell a combined 5 million copies, despite being on a console with an install base of well over 100 million. thats not even 5% of PS2 owners that bought a copy. for god of war 3 to sell even 5 million, it needs about 15% of current PS3 owners to buy it. so why would a sequel to games that didnt really sell too well suddenly be bought by 3x the amount of people percentage-wise, and also make people buy a console for it?
it literally does not make any sense how you can come to that conclusion.

Why are people so quick to bash Halo and all people associated with it? Many of the hate comments I’ve seen here seem mostly from the Halo Hate Bandwagon. In fact, I rarely see a highly-rated series like Halo get bashed as much as Halo. I don’t care if you simply don’t like it and leave it be. But it annoys the hell out of me when people hate and hate and hate and hate, calling it a piece of crap and such when real pieces of crap can never get the same fame, fortune, and the same time infamy as Halo.
Let’s just enjoy what we like, and respect what others like.
By the way, both games look absolutely amazing.
I’m 100% sure this will be voted down, simply because I’m defending Halo, even though it has no negativity against other games. So I ask you, down-voters, what did the game (just the game, not the community) ever do to you?

Generally the people that hate Halo are the people that havent even played it because its not on a Playstation. thats really what it boils down to – they, for some reason or another dont have a 360 to go with their playstation (generally its a financial reason, usually they cant afford it, but others its because they just wont buy anything thats not sony) and as such cant play it, so they reassure themselves they made the right decision of buying a playstation by rubbishing everything thats not on playstation.
