How can the next Gears dethrone Uncharted 2?
Rumors says that the next Gears of War (Gears of War 3) game will be unveiled this year during the upcoming E3. I’m a big fan of the series so I’m looking forward to what the developers at Epic games are going to do with the third entry in the series. But no one can deny the fact that Uncharted 2 has really raised the bar for third person shooters and for many gamers Uncharted 2 is the best third person shooter ever created. So how can the next Gears of War game raise the bar even higher? We have constructed a list of things the next Gears should have in order to compete with the best of the best:
1. Fully destructible environments:
Just imagine yourself playing a Gear of War game knowing that you’re no longer safe by just hiding behind a wall or any cover object. The gameplay will be far more dynamic and the action will be more intense. Also, the game will force the players to behave more strategically during online play.
2. No host advantage, no lag and an online matchmaking system that works fine at launch:
Gears of War 2 had some glaring problems in its online features when the game launched back in 2008. Waiting for over 10 minutes just to play an online match was something unacceptable. Also, issues like host advantage and bullet lag were annoying as hell. I know that Epic games has released many updates and the online gaming experience has had improved by those updates, but seriously we need a game that works fine at launch. One piece of advice for Epic games: release an open beta for Gears 3 before you launch the game.
3. Better story:
The story telling in Gears 2 was a great improvement over the original. But the story wasn’t as intriguing as the action in that game. Please No cliffhanger ending, improve character development (especially for Marcus Fenix) and give us better plot twists.
4. Four co-op play for the campaign mode:
Gears of War 2 wasn’t designed to support four co-op play in its campaign mode. In Gears 2 it didn’t make sense to implement four co-op play because of the story; as the members of Delta squad got separated many times during the events in Gears 2. Now for the third one, Epic games must design the game to support four co-op play by making the story revolves around four characters battling as a team the whole game. Four co-op play will definitely make the game more intense and more enjoyable.
5. Make the game less linear and battles on larger scale:
Most (if not all) third person shooters are designed as a linear experience nowadays. While that isn’t a bad thing, we hope that the developers to design the levels in the upcoming third person shooters while keeping in mind to provide the players with bigger environments to play in and more freedom in finishing missions, instead of go from point A to B. It would be great if we see the developers at Epic games design the levels in Gears of War 3 as real battlefields with multiple paths.
6. More creative weapons, more like the Lancer:
One of the most iconic things about Gears of War games is the Lancer weapon with the chainsaw, it was uniquely designed and had something creative about it. Also, the Lancer provided one of the most brutal ways to kill an enemy in a videogame in recent memory. The other weapons in the previous Gears of War games were fun to use, but there wasn’t a single weapon that stood out like the Lancer. The next Gears should have at least one new weapon as creative as the Lancer.
7. Better visuals and performance:
Gears of War games are some of the best looking games this generation. The first game in the series was one of the first games to raise the bar visually this generation. The second one was even better looking than the first one with better looking character models, bigger areas and more impressive lightning effects. But truth to be told, it wasn’t the big graphical leap fans of the series were hoping for. So, Gears of War 3 must raise the bar again like the first one did if Epic games want Gears of War 3 to compete with the best of the best. Also, technical issues like texture pop up/in must be gone forever. It would be unacceptable for Gears of War 3 to have those technical issues in these days.

well what sold more? so why would they need to dethrone UC2? and its just your opinion, if it was that great it would of sold better compared to the big 360 fps(halo,gow) , i think besides out opinion the only way to judge a game success is by its sales, because in that respect the consumers have spoken. compared to halo2 and gow2 it easly got beat.

While the PS3 user base is smaller than the 360′s user base and didn’t sell as many units as Halo or GOW, U2 beat those by miles in terms of critical acclaim. Anyone with half a brain and is not biased toward the 360 will tell you U2 is the better game.

You forgot to mention platforming and environment traversal sections in levels. And they will need to add a new grunt voiced by Nolan North. That would help. Just kidding.
Regardless of the success of Uncharted 2, financially or critically, GOW 3 will likely be as good as, if not better than, the previous entry in the series. And it will sell a bazillion copies. So no worries. It may not get game of the year but it will still kick serious ass.

What!!.. GOW2 is already great game, it doesn’t have to compete with UC2. You have to log many “Many” hours behind a game to qualify it as the “Best Game” ever. UC2 is definitely a huge step in the right direction. It would be coool if more games had the same visual quality that is carries. However game play mechanics go a long way in qualifying a games reputation and profile. MW2 is suffering from the weight of its own popularity with its various updates and user complaints. What brought MW to prominence was its game the play mechanics. To some degree it really wasn’t designed for mass consumption. GOW2 mechanics are just fine, but the matchmaking was atrociously burdening. Players who are into GOW series can over look this faliing because the game play is so satisfying. GOW2 is a great game, they don’t have to do more than the usual to the series. However addressing the matchmaking and related online play issues would make the game defintely more enjoyable.

Dunno why people are talking about God of War in the comments (don’t get me wrong I think it’s a great series), but whatever.
I’m not a fan of Epic games so I don’t think I’ll ever like a Gears game, but destructible environments would be awesome!

how about multi player like gears 1??? gears 2 multi player was one of the worst experiences i have had. they took everything good in gears 1 and made it bad. a multi player like gears 1 is all im asking for.

@Author…Lemme getthis straight, for this game to complete, you want it to look better, play better, perform better, better creativity, less linear story, have a better story, four play co-op and a better mp at boot….ummm,EVERY game needs that to contend with U2. That is why U2 is so amazing, it is doesn’t need to be better at EVERYTHING lol Sounds like you want a different game entirely lol

The only way Gears of War 3 has a chance of dethroning Uncharted 2 is by being made on the PS3. The 360 is a good console but its not great. The 360 has already been pushed to the limit and the PS3 hasn’t. Having Gears 3 on the PS3 would make Gears 3 epic.
I like Gears of War and Gears 1 was the only reason I got a 360. I played it many times. Gears 2 was ok not as good as the 1st when your comparing the single player. The features on Gears 2 where a great addition but the 360s limited capabilities made the game slow, lag and gave the host of every game an unfair advantage. Even the AI bots were screwed up which was the whole reason I only played Gears 2 once.
When you play Uncharted you know your playing a good game. Uncharted 1 and 2 have an amazing story. The Uncharted was improved astronomically with the addition of being able to play online. The online is flawless and no one has an unfair advantage. The AI bots are not screwed up like in Gears 2. All because the brilliant people behind the Uncharted series picked the correct console for their work of art to be play on.
That is the reason why Gears 3 will not dethrone Uncharted 1 or 2. The Gears of War series will always have its flaws due to the console its creators chose to represent their work. The creators of the Gears of War games can blame microsoft for making a mediocre console. The creators of the Uncharted were smart for picking Sony.

Dude seriously I love Gears but people need to shut the fuck up about sales because the Wii is obviously outselling the 360 and PS3 combined despite in my own opinion, is a terrible system (and I’ve bought everything Nintendo until Gamecube). Now even though I own a PS3, Gears is one of those series from my 360 heydays I really miss.
My conclusion to this rant, Gears doesn’t need to try to top Uncharted 2, it just needs to be another part of my badass collection and for the love of god, it would be nice to see this game as multiplatform with differences between versions like Splinter Cell was on Xbox and PS2.

First, I thought Uncharted 2 was an action adventure more than it is a TPS. And second, I am getting sick of people comparing game to game and saying it needs to dethrone or be better than a certain game. Like people that say how can Halo be more like COD or Killzone or dethrone it. Gears is gears and halo is halo an cod is cod and so on. That’s why gaming is great. All games has it’s uniqueness. Gears is fine the way it is. Sure it should have more new stuff for gears 3 only because it’s a sequel and we don’t want gears 2 and 3 to be too similar but it shouldn’t have to dethrone U2. For what? I love Uncharted 1 and 2 and I have them both. If I want to play an Uncharted style game, then Ima play Uncharted.

there won’t be anymore Gears of wars game this generation
due to the simply fact that the 360 is not longer able to impress, it´s perfectly capable of running new games but the shock factor of seeing the first gears of war back on 2006 or bioshock a year later is long gone
nothing that will be released on the 360 can make an impression similar to Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain or God of War 3

Well Uncharted 2 basically copied GoW gameplay…. So it hasn’t done anything new, its just a newer game.
i think GoW3 should have another blade weapon (maybe the fat butcher knife) to use along with the shield in Gow2. Also maybe an armor item pick-up, that increases your defense overall—a kickass looking body armor

I don’t think Uncharted 2 was overall better than GOW2. I did like some of the more colorful levels, but the characters and voice acting and story and truly epic moments in GOW2 was easily put uncharted 2 to shame, just as many of the same elements in Uncharted put GOW2 to shame. The ending of Uncharted 2 was really good but I don’t think it was as epic compared to GOW2, not by a long shot. Both titles are complete fun and I had a blast. I only just finished uncharted 2 a couple of weeks ago and I really enjoyed it but I could not help to compare to the really great moments in GOW2. Neither of the two games ownes one another. IMO as a gamer that plays both his 360 and the PS3. In the past I have completely supported the 360 but I now have both consoles and I am truly enjoying both of them…

One last thing…. THE Wii should not even be compared. It is for casual gamers only. IT IS NOWHERE in the same gaming category….. Hell if we use that logic how many IPHONE game apps sold??? Does it need to be compared to PS3 and 360????

What a bad article lol.
Your first mistake was saying that uncharted is a better game than gears of war. That’s all highly subjective opinion.
Secondly, you say that the only way gears can be better is to basically do all these things that uncharted didn’t do, when uncharted did nothing that gears didn’t do. Hypocritical? Just a bit.
You say gears has to be less linear, yet I have NEVER played a more linear game than uncharted 1/2 in my 20 plus years of gaming. Gears was already much less linear and had bigger scale battles. Also, uncharted had no destructible environments, but gears 2 had a decent amount of destructability.
All gears needs to do is fix the matchmaking and bring back the ability to see a list of matches available for the player to choose from. It’s multiplayer, despite the problems, was still better than uncharted 2s. Single player is already good, it’s story isn’t just an Indiana jones rip off like uncharted.
And yes, I own uncharted 2 as well as gears of war 2.

Gears is still the king of third person shooters and doesn’t need to dethrorne anyone.
Uncharted is an action-adventure game with cover based shooting elements, but just like GTA IV it can’t even begin to compete with the refined and polished shooting mechanism of Gears – it is a derivative in this game (and just the same, gears can’t compete with Uncharted platforming elements and hopefully they won’t try to include any).
Uncharted 2 triumphs graphically if that was your point , but it was released later – and these two games always raise the bar:
Gears of war < Uncharted < Gears of War 2 < Uncharted 2.
So it's easy to see where this trend is going…

What can Gears 3 do to topple Uncharted? Simple – it can’t. No matter what Epic do for Gears 3 it will always be a mediocre game compared to Uncharted. Gears Of War 2 was a flop through and through, terrible online, crap story (Pretty much a copy/paste job from the Halo storyline) and mediocre graphics. Gears 2′s graphics/gameplay couldn’t even beat Uncharted 1 so how is Gears 3 supposed to beat Uncharted 2?
Uncharted 2 completely dominated videogames last year. It picked up the award for Best Graphics AND Game Of The Year. In 2008, Gears Of War 2 recieved neither award. Why? Because it was a mediocre game with no graphical improvement at all. It’s likely that Gears 3 will follow the same path (Assuming it DOES come out this year, which is looking highly unlikely).
Uncharted 2 will always be the genre – defining game for TPS. Gears 3 can try hard to earn second – place, however it’ll struggle to even accomplish that.

why is it looking unlikely McFail? you do remember that Gears of War 2 was only announced at e3 in 2008, about 6 months before release, dont you? Microsoft announce lots of their high profile games at E3 for release later that year. they did it last year with Forza 3 and Left 4 Dead 2, and rest assured they will do it again at E3 this year.

i think it would be great to have all these features in the game but i dont tink gow nedd to dethrone any game in my opinion gears of war has the best story, weapons, characters, maps and violence. also i think gears of war is better then any game but i respect the other games too. And to all the people that think this article sucks. i don not agree with them. but Everyone has fredom of speech and they can say whatever they want. however , i only care if i like the game, not if the rest of the people do.
