Top 10 best RPGs of this generation so far

Posted by Ahmad Dajani On February - 9 - 2010

My favorite genre is definitely RPG. I enjoy playing them immensely and have a passion for them. No matter if they are Western or Japanese, I always have time to play them. There were a lot of great RPGs that had been released this generation. Some of them were great, some were good and some were bad. It wasn’t an easy task for me to make a list of the best 10 RPGs of this generation, but there you have it.

Without further ado I present to you the top 10 best RPGs of this generation:

10. Tales of Vesperia:

Tales of Symphonia which was released for the Gamecube and PS2 (only in Japan) was my favorite Tales game until the arrival of my current favorite game in the series Tales of Vesperia which was released for Xbox360 back in 2008. The main protagonist of the game Yuri Lowell and the rest of his companions stories were entertaining, funny and exciting. The game also has one of the most fun combat systems you will ever play in RPG.

PS3 owners will soon get the chance to play this game sometime this year which means more gamers will be enjoying this great RPG.

9. Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core:

This prequel for the much beloved Final Fantasy VII is a one of the finest games on the PSP. A lot of our favorite characters from Final Fantasy 7 do make an appearance in this game with some great and new cast of characters. Crisis Core tells a great back story to one of the best RPGs ever made. The game has great soundtrack, fun battle system and one of the most emotional game endings you will ever see.

8. Fable 2:

OK. I agree that Peter Molyneux always over hype his games before they get released, but you can’t ignore the fact that he always pushes for innovation. Does he always succeed in bringing innovation to the gaming industry? No, but sometimes he does. What does set Fable 2 apart from other games is how accessible it is and the huge number of things you can do in the game. It’s an RPG with some gameplay elements taken from sandbox games, some gameplay elements taken from adventure games and some gameplay elements that never existed in other games.

7. Valkyria Chronicles:

This impressive looking game from Sega is so under-appreciated that I want to ask gamers why they aren’t buying this game? The developers of this game have had created a piece of art. In many times while playing this gem, I was floored by its amazing artistic design and great story telling. Also, it has a unique battle system which mixes traditional strategy with free-roaming combat. Certainly, one of the best strategy-RPGs of the past decade.

6. Lost Odyssey:

Lost Odyssey in my opinion is the most underrated and under-appreciated game of this generation. The story of immortal Kaim and his fellows is one of the most emotional and engrossing stories I have ever seen in a videogame. The “Thousand Years of Dreams” stories featured in the game and Lirum’s death scene touched me like no other game did before. The game also has great turn based combat system, great graphics and artistic style and one of the best soundtracks ever made by Nobuo Uematsu. If you want to play a great RPG, Lost Odyssey is definitely the one to go for.

5. Demon’s Souls:

This game was a very big surprise for RPG gamer. Many gamers had doubted the game when Famitsu gave it a 29 out of 40. But thanks to god, the game turned out to be a much better game than what we meant to believe. This game is very difficult. In fact, it’s one of the most challenging games I have ever played. It was like the Ninja Gaiden’s of role playing games. Also, the game has some of the most innovative online features we have ever seen in a RPG. If you love RPGs and have a PS3, you have to get this game. It’s as simple as that.

4. Fallout 3:

The developers at Bethesda do know how to make epic role playing games filled with countless hours of gameplay. This great post-apocalyptic RPG was everything fans of the series have ever hoped for. The game has Brutal combat, great atmosphere, long main quest, huge amount of side missions, deep RPG elements and much more. Fallout 3 isn’t just one of the best RPGs of this generation, it’s one of the best games ever made.

3. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion:

It’s one of the biggest and deepest role playing games I have ever played. This first person-role playing game is so huge that you will find yourself getting distracted in many occasions from finishing the main quest because of its beautiful vistas and the huge number of things you can do in this game. It has a long and entertaining main quest, beautiful visuals, deep combat and customization, great soundtrack and more than 100 hours of gameplay. It’s a dream came true for role playing gamers.

2. Mass Effect 2:

It was so hard for me to choose between Mass Effect 2 and the first game in this epic trilogy. I liked the main story of the first game more than the story of its sequel. But at the same time, Mass Effect 2 improvements over the original were huge. Its better character development, improved visuals, smoother experience and the unique experience you get by importing your save files from the first game are some of the things that do give Mass Effect 2 the edge over its predecessor.

1. Dragon Age: Origins:

While it doesn’t have the best visuals, Dragon Age: Origins puts many RPGs to shame. The complexity of the moral choices you make in this game is just one of the reasons why Origins is one of the best RPGs ever made. In many times while playing Dragon’s Age: Origin, I found myself putting the controller down for over five minutes (sometimes more) just wondering which moral choice I want to select in order to progress in the game. Add to this a great battle system, superb cast of characters, mind blowing customization options and a very long main quest and you will see why Bioware is the king of the genre.

    4. Dragon Age: Origins
    5. Persona 4

Mass Effect 2 IS A real rpg and most of the missing elements aren’t missing at all. They’re just there in a bugly unusual and brilliantly simplified form.

Demon’s Souls is my favorite. I think Dragon Age is a 7.5 or so game, and I could not finish Oblivion because I disliked it so much. I haven’t played any of the others, although I did play the first Fable (which was like an 8 game) and the demo for Valkyria Chronicles (I was not a fan of the combat system), so I can’t speak for much.

While ME2 is a great game. I too enjoyed the story of ME1 better. less of an obvious set up for ME3.
but for a pure RPG game. Definitely DA:O hands down for best game.
for both Dragons Age and ME2, did i put my controller down and just stare at my options and try to decided. Only twice did I do that with ME1.

As for the top 5 placings I agree whole-heartedly.

Though I would had Fable 2 and Valkryie swap places, in my opinion.

    @ kane_1371:

First of all, all of those games are RPGs. Some are western RPG while the others are JRPGs. Also, this list is about the best 10 RPGs of this generation so how you want of the author to put FFXII in the list? FFXII was released on PS2 (last generation console). Think for a while before you post a comment.

Valkyria Chronicles isn’t a RPG…Why do people keep classifying this game as an RPG/JRPG?

Its turn-based strategy, plain and simple. Linear path from start to finish, battles are taken in turns. Is it really that hard to define?

The fact that you can level up classes doesn’t make it a role-playing game, if thats the case then Infamous must be an RPG also as you can enhance skiils. Initial D the driving game must also be an RPG as you can upgrade cars.

Take a look at X-COM and Jagged Alliance on the PC, both classed as turn-based strategy and with stupid levels of depth with regards to leveling up etc. Anime styled graphics don’t make it an RPG… *rant over* :) Was a good game though no doubt about that. :D

  13. Guy Guy Said,

Fable 2? Barely an RPG. More of an action-adventure game with no difficulties and no real challenges.
Valkyria Chronicles? Turn based strategy game. Definitely not RPG. Totally agree with @Caseh about that.
Demon’s Souls? Piece of trash. We had these so called “hardcore” dungeon-crawlers on the PC more then 10 years ago. It’s the exact opposite of fable 2: here’s there is only difficulty for the sake of difficulty and not for any kind of real progress, story or game. I would actually throw torchlight into this list before putting in this game.

Had to go with Oblivion on this one. I haven’t yet played ME2, but Oblivion was better IMO then dragon age, mass effect and fallout 3.

  15. Caseh Caseh Said,

    @Lightelos

If anything going by genre, Fallout 3 is more of a RPG than any other game in that list.

Lone player, level grind, free-roaming. You play as a single character and play the role of that character only. Japanese RPGs allows seemed to follow the same formula other than you tend to form parties rather than go as a loner.

I guess it goes on what you perceive as a RPG due to experience, I grew up playing Dungeon Master on the Amiga so that games forumla is what I consider to be the main elements that make up a RPG. Although I wll always consider Final Fantasy 3 to be the the best RPG I have ever played, Its nothing like Dungeon Master but as long as the core elements are in place its genre should effectively be classified the same.

  29. Luke Luke Said,

    Seriously, very biased list.

The Witcher was well received by both critics and players. Wouldn’t rank him highest but it definitely deserves the spot more than dumbed down Oblivion (huge step backwards towards Morrowind and the whole TES franchise). Fallout 3 is also ranked too high although the available DLC and a handful of user created content make the game still playable and enjoyable so I don’t object to it being on the list.
ME2 is more of an action RPG, epic perhaps, in terms of visual effects and voice acting, but it feels more of an interactive movie, somewhat linear.

I think that due to this being an middle-east based website (Jordan), the list may be incomplete – still, no excuse of favouring games that can hardly be considered RPGs (mentioned Valkyria Chronicles) or are crap (Tales of Vesperia) and not including ones that have actually been awarded and anticipated (like the Witcher).

First of all, we are not biased. The Witcher was a good RPG, but it isn’t in our top 10 best RPGs.

“I think that due to this being an middle-east based website (Jordan), the list may be incomplete”

We play the same games and all the games that you and other gamers play in other regions so your assumption here is incorrect. Don’t forget that this is our opinion and we respect other people opinions. Valkyria Chronicles is strategy RPG which means that we can put it in our list. In your opinion Tales of Vesperia isn’t a good RPG, but we think that it’s a very good RPG. This list is based on opinions don’t forget about that.
