Xbox360 looks strong in 2010, how will Sony fight back?

Posted by Ahmad Dajani On February - 14 - 2010

2010 is shaping up to be one of the biggest years in the history of videogames. The HD war is at its peak now, and I think that 2010 will be a very critical year for both of Microsoft and Sony. Sony did a great job in 2009 by releasing some of the best exclusives of this generation and the PS3 slim. But 2009 is gone forever, and we are now looking forward to what Sony have to offer in 2010. On the other hand, Xbox360 lineup in 2009 was lacking, but in 2010, it seems that Microsoft is pushing the Xbox360 as hard as they could.

X10 gave us a good look for what to expect of the Xbox360 this year. With games such as Halo: reach, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell: Conviction, and Fable 3, you can see that the Xbox360 lineup is much stronger in 2010 compared to last year’s. And if Microsoft’s Aaron Greenburg recent statement that X10 is “just a glimpse” of this year’s lineup is true, I think it will make things even harder for Sony’s PS3 to catch up with the Xbox360.

I’m not saying that PS3 doesn’t have great games in 2010. In the coming days, PS3 owners will play something unique called Heavy Rain and in March PS3 owners will finally have the opportunity to play one of the most anticipated games of this generation, God of War 3. Also, Gran Turismo 5 will be released this year as well. But where are the PS3 exclusives that will be released in the second half of this year?

Fumito Ueda’s upcoming title The Last Guardian might not be released this year (though I hope it will). Also, unannounced games such as Killzone 3, Infamous 2 and others which I think that they will get announced in the coming months or at E3 2010 will not make it this year. Killzone 2 and Infamous were just released last year and I don’t think that they can develop and release full blown sequels in this short period of time.

We all know that both of Sony and Microsoft are making games for their motion controllers, but recently, I’m noticing that third party developers such as Capcom and Ubisoft are leaning more towards Project Natal than to Sony’s motion controller. Which does concern me. Don’t also forget that the Xbox360 is still the cheapest HD console which will always be a major Obstacle for Sony to catch up with Microsoft’s Xbox360.

Xbox360 already looks strong in 2010. On the other hand, Sony looks good, but not as strong as they were in 2009. E3 2010 is just months away which means that Sony may surprise us all and turn the play field upside down. In my opinion, the company that is going to sell more consoles in 2010 might be the winner of the HD war. What do you think? Will Sony strike back? Tell us in the comment section.

360 for the rest of the year:

    splinter cell conviction
    alan wake
    halo reach
    fable 3
    crackdown 2

PS3 for the rest of the year

    heavy rain
    god of war 3
    mod nation racers
    gran turismo 5
    the last guardian
    the agency
    resonance of fate
    DC online
    resistance 3
    arc

and Sony doesn’t need to catch up to 360 because PS3 came out a year later, the ever closing gap on console sold numbers between them only shows that PS3 has always outsold 360 while they were both on the market

also don’t forget that splinter cell will most likely be on PS3 as well and crackdown 2 looks like a PS2 game

as it stands now 360 line up for 2010 is inferioir in numbers and quality to PS3′s, only gears 3 might make then even but that’s before learning what else Sony has for E3

on E3 360 will be all about Natal, they don’t have nay other studio available to make AAA games now that they have rare making Natal shovelware

Every year Sony has a “Playstation Gamer’s Day” event in the Spring, similar to Microsoft’s X10 event before E3, and there’s no doubt in my mind that Sony will have more than what’s already announced.

Also, I think BOTH the PS3 and 360 have literally the same amount of significant titles for 2010…. the non-sense I’ve been hearing like “all Sony has is GT5 and GOW3 in 2010″ is just dumb.

Sony’s MLB: The Show, one of the highest rated Baseball games is coming next month (even Aaron Greenburg acknowledged his love of the game on PS3) as well as Yakuza 4 in Japan, and even though they may not be “blockbuster” caliber, both are guaranteed to be solid titles.

AGENT and GT5 will be Sony’s biggest blockbusters for the latter half of the year, where as Fable 3 and Halo Reach will be Microsoft’s equivalent.

Insomniac always has 1 game per year, so they are guaranteed to have something, and David Jaffe’s next game is due sometime in the near future. Incognito hasn’t released a PS3 game in nearly 3 years since Warhawk, so they will probably have something in 2010. Evolution Studio’s hasn’t released anything since Motorstorm 2 in Fall 2008 and it’s possible they will have something too that’s unannounced.

Both the PS3 and 360 have great lineups in 2010 IMO. Sony may not have a lot announced for the latter half of 2010, and just a reminder: http://www.n4g.com/News-474848.aspx

2010 360 line up looks just as weak as last year’s:

splinter cell will most likely end up on PS3 and it’s nothing special on the first place (and it’s not an exclusive)
    crackdown 2 looks like a PS2 game
games that are delayed numerous times usually suck so don’t hold your breath for alan wake, just like it happened with too human
halo reach will have great production values but the same last gen gameplay as all halo games (no sprinting, no iron sights aiming)
natal will be irrelevant for real gamers

only a gears 3 announcement can make the 360 line up look better

The 1st half of 2010 belongs to Sony. MS only had Mass Effect 2 and nothing else. Sony has MLB The Show, Yakuza 3, Heavy Rain, God Of War 3 and Stories from Liberty City (Finally).

Now the 2nd Half MS owns that because you only know Sony has Mod Nation Racers and GT5 at the end of the year. While MS has all their blockbusters coming out.

Hopefully at E3 we hear something about Getaway, Eight Days, The Last Guardian, Agent, Twisted Metal, FFXIII Versus, Resistence 3, Killzone 3, Infamous 2, LBP 2, Uncharted 3. 2011 could be even bigger for 2011. To say MS will be 2010 year is a little to early for that since we don’t know what Sony has planned for the 2nd Half.

The XBOX 2010 line-up reminds me alot of their 2007 line-up. I’m sure everyone remembers at E3 how then Microsoft spokesman Peter Moore claimed that the 360 had this perfect storm of Gaming with Mass Effect and Halo 3 Dropping and whatnot. All in all Halo didn’t shift the millions of consoles microsoft would have wanted and it just helped the 360 maintain the lead as opposed to grow it significantly. Same thing will probably happen this year.

Speaking as someone who owns all three consoles, I am happy to buy whatever games I wish — without worrying about which gaming system is winning the “war” (apparently, just a war of words: sound and fury signifying nothing.)

Personally, i don’t see how anyone can really appreciate all that modern video games have to offer if you only have one system. Some people in this forum are already knocking games that haven’t been released yet and which, apparently, they couldn’t play in any case (having barricaded themselves around one console.)

“Either/or” thinking leads to squabbles; “both/and” thinking leads to greater happiness.

Agent: Agent has nothing more released so far than a logo and premise (70′s spy stuff!) and a developer (Rockstar). Also, Remember when PS3 fans were beating the drum over LA Noire? Well they finally broke some info on that and now the game that no one had ever seen that couldn’t be done on 360 because it had no cell processor…has gone multiplatform.

DC Online: Good luck with yet another Superhero MMO being a ‘big’ draw to the PS3. I could be wrong but who the hell cares about this outside of some weird comic book fans?

Resistance 3 : 1 and 2 weren’t terribly exciting even to PS3 owners. 3 is generally considered to be a step back from what people liked about 1. Even Insomniac has been a bit sheepish about how 2 was recieved. Other than that we know nothing about Resistance 3 except that there was a Resistance 3 billboard on a movie set.

Resonance of Fate: Multiplatform. Look it up.

The Last Guardian: Looks interesting but will it be more than something the critics and a smallish niche like? I doubt it given Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. I’m looking for ward to it but I wouldn’t bet a farm on it.

Gran Turismo 5: the only truly BIG title listed so far

Flower 2 : ‘That Game Compay’ did Flow for the PC,and an upgraded version for PSN, Flower for PSN, and Cloud for the PC. They haven’t said anything about a Flower 2 that I’ve heard. And if they did (I’d like to see a link) I still doubt it’s a big draw for most console gamers.

Neither Crackdown nor Crackdown 2 looks like a PS2 game. San Andreas looks like a PS2 game.

Halo Reach is likely to be a HUGE seller with a lot of online interest whether you talk mess about it or not.

Splinter Cell: Conviction probably isn’t coming to PS3. Just 360 and PC. If it’s good it’ll probably be a big deal given that it will be marketed by Ubi (like Assassion’s creed games) .

Doa766, I’m not saying that 360 has more to offer than PS3 this year because it’s too early in the year to be surem but you are CLEARLY reaching like mad to come up with a better PS3 lineup than has actually been announced and that makes your attempts to debunk this article look really weak and pathetic. Why not relax and just see what unfolds okay? Then we can all judge for ourselves. You aren’t impressing anybody with this shaky fanboy stuff.

And really, most of the best games have been multiplatform this gen.

Your underestimating the ps3 side i think. Lets see. First we had mag, which despite the reviews has a hardcore following, heavy rain this month, one of the most anticipated games this gen god of war 3 next month, followed by gran turismo not too long after. Which keep in mind the folowers behind the gt franchise. GT1 and GT2 were the top sellers of ps1, GT3 and GT4 were among the top sellers of ps2, and GT prologue is still the highest selling ps3 game. And its a freakin demo. Its a big franchise. Then later we all know resistance 3 is coming. Isomniac has released a game every year since ps3 launch switching between resistance and ratchet and since last year it was ratchet, this year is resistance. And they have noted that they are giving the series a major update in the third title. Then mod nation racers is coming too. Go head and say its a kid game, but LBP was classic and using the same formula, this too looks great. Then last guardian, last two games were gems so you know this will be. And Agent, developed by GTA developers, instant gem. And kz2 developers said kz3 should be out early 2011 or possibly late 2010 since they dont have to develop a whole new engine. So those were the big titles i remember, but theres some not comfirmed too.
    So overall heres the list.
    Confirmed:
    God of War 3
    Heavy Rain
    MAG
    White Knight Chronicles
    Gran Turismo 5
    The Last Guardian

    Not Confirmed:
    The Agency
    Infamous 2
    Resistance 3
    Killzone 3
    Twisted Metal
    Syphon Filter
    Starhawk(warhawk 2)

Im sure im missing things but ya. Looks good for sony. They said they have a lot more to show us and i think this could be the biggest year for ps3. Sorry this is so long. Wasnt paying attention lol.

The Secret World (not AAA, neverheard game)
The Swarm (not AAA, neverheard game)
Natal (Bad eyetoy ripoff that hopefully flops)

    @Emery

Same could be said many of those games which have been listed to Xbox 360 “big hits and exclusive” lists. Only (true) big hit exclusives 360 has this year are Halo: Reach, Alan Wake, Fable 3. Other games on the lists are either not proven AAA games or even exclusives. Games like Mass Effect and Splinter Cell can be played with mid-end PC that everyone has nowadays. So you won’t be needing Xbox 360 to play them. Games like Metro are not proven IPs and games like Crackdown 2 not AAA.

“Agent has nothing more released so far than a logo and premise (70’s spy stuff!) and a developer (Rockstar).”

Rockstar has proven themselves by making numerous AAA games. Agent will be a great game no doubt about it.

“Also, Remember when … LA Noire? …has gone multiplatform.”

Not so recent news eh. They said as early as 2008 that it’s going multiplatform.

    “Resistance 3 : 1 and 2 weren’t terribly exciting even to PS3 owners.”

Maybe not terribly exciting, but good games nevertheless. Metacritic scores for Resistance: Fall of Man 86 and Resistance 2 87 proves that.

“The Last Guardian: Looks interesting but will it be more than something the critics and a smallish niche like? I doubt it given Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.”

Yes, because Team ICO has a cult following. And I wouldn’t call them a smallish niche titles because ICO and SOTC have sold altogether about 2.5 million copies worldwide.

“Gran Turismo 5: the only truly BIG title listed so far”

    Not only, but definitely big.

LOL, how does the 360 look strong when it doesn’t have any exclusive games lined up? Either the person who wrote this article just cashed a nice check from Microsoft or they don’t follow the games industry very closely at all.

    The PS3 has:
    White Knight Chronicles (US/EU)
    Heavy Rain
    God Of War Collection (EU)
    God Of War 3
    Yakuza 3 (US/EU)
    Yakuza 4 (JPN)
    White Knight Chronicles 2 (JPN)
    Gran Turismo 5
    3D Dot Game Heroes
    Modnation Racers
    The Last Guardian
    The Agent

    The 360 has:
    Halo: Reacharound
A bunch of games that are also on PC so they are therefore not exclusive, only a retard would call a game that’s on 2 different platforms “Exclusive” to one of them, LOL!

The 360 looks even worse than it did in 2009 (If that’s possible). Microsoft’s lack of AAA games from it’s first – party studios is epicly noticeable now. This is why in 2009 Uncharted 2 won GOTY and the crap on the 360 didn’t even get a mention. This year it will be a similar story, either God Of War 3 or Gran Turismo 5 will sweep the 2010 awards and Halo: Reacharound will flop just as badly as the last 2 Halo games have.

Seriously, who cares? Who cares if XO gets a game that PS3 doesn’t? Who cares PS3 gets a game XO doesn’t? Why should you or I care? I picked my console because it fit ME better, not because it had a better lineup back then, not because the graphics were better. Because I liked the feel of it.

And seriously, if PC and PS3 for example get a game, in the console war it’s an exclusive for the PS3 since Wii and XO don’t get it.

And yes, I just repeated that twice before anybody started flaming me for being one-sided. Yes, some of you seem to act so stupidly that it would have only been a matter of time. But yeah, this is pointless of me since none of you fanboys will read the comments section again after having flamed on it, “Yeah, I feel so good after bashing some XO / PS3 faggot fans in the comments, time for a burrito!”

I get to play sony exclusives AND microsoft exclusives. GoW3 will be the best game this year but that s just my opinion. Looking forward to halo: reach this fall. And MAYBE Conviction. (having mixed feelings about it)

@ David Macphail ‘Halo: Reacharound will flop just as badly as the last 2 Halo games have.’ LOOOOOL Halo 3 sold more than 10 million copies. That s far from being a flop even if the campaign did suck. (Love the multiplayer which is the selling point of Halo)

That being said, both consoles have good games coming out this year. So we’ll see who comes out on top. And for both consoles’ motion controllers, until we have confirmed games and screenshots and video, who knows which one will be better or give the best user experience.

I never bought a PS3 because at the time of launch the price was way too high to justify the purchase. I might consider it now, although I could care less about the blu-ray issue though. I have kids, anything that plays discs is just asking for the media to get ruined.

There is still a few unknown status on games in the works that I’m pretty sure will be at E3 this year. You have Jeff’s new game that every thinks is a new Twisted Metal. Starhawk has been known for awhile now from the Warhawk creator. There is talk that Agent will be out this year. I’m sure Insomniac will show off Resistance 3 but I don’t think it would get released this year.

And besides, it’s just February and people strongly “think” that the PS3 is going to lose. Hell most of the games aren’t even announced yet, maybe after E3, you can decide who will win and who will lose. Then you wait on the sales to see what really happens =D

  40. avatar LBDz Said,

I get to play Sony exclusives AND Microsoft exclusives. Sony has the stronger games line up out the two though.

Mass Effect is NOT doing as good as hoped. Also it is much better on the PC than the console, so why settle for 2nd best if you own a PC already.? All i have heard lately is people moan about the game on the 360 version due to not being able to read the text if playing on a SD TV. And worse still is that the game makers are NOT correcting it either. PC doesn’t have these problems.

Now i’m STILL waiting for these Next Gen HD Graphics promised to us on the 360 console. So far not one game on this console has come close to a PS3 exclusive in terms of graphics.

Its also funny that Halo Reach is being compared to Killzone 2 which is now a year old and still looks better than what Halo Reach does judging by this site.

    http://gamingbolt.com/2010/02/14/halo-reach-versus-killzone-2-hd-screenshot-comparison/ “.

    OR

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-halo-reach-alpha-analysis-blog-entry ” = Gameplay from Halo Reach.

So by the time Halo Reach gets released, Killzone 3 will be round the corner to push it back down again. So IMO PS3 is now showing what it can do while MS is STILL trying to match games like Killzone 2 / Uncharted 2 / ect, ect.

Now the other factors that people are taking into consideration when console buying is that Blu-Ray is now the standard Disc Player, and that games like ” Final Fantasy XIII ” are now showing how they can take full advantage of the newer Blu-Ray tech.

    EXAMPLE.

A much better quality game than the 360 due to NO compression taking place on Blu-Ray console. Yet Compression is needed on 360 due to Limited Disc Space, which also means the game needs ( 3 Discs ) due to the OLDER DVD format.

Now what this shows is that the games coming out nowadays are in need of much more Disc space than what the 360 can cope with, which is why PS3 uses ” one Disc ” while the 360 uses ” three Discs ” for the same game.

People are seeing this happen, and that the games being made nowadays are better made on the PS3, with more AAA titles getting released on the PS3 than the 360, also the FREE online to play these games, i would really say the PS3 has nothing to worry about, and if anything the 360 should start to sweat.

Actually NEITHER system has any really good exclusive games coming out this year.

    Here’s what I’m looking for in 2010:

    Starcraft 2
    Final Fantasy 13
Mod Nation Racers (if its good)
    new GRAW

That’s basically it. Note that one is a PS3 exclusive, 1 is comp only, 2 are multi-platform. The 360 has Halo Reach and maybe I’ll pikc that up, but the Halos are all basically the same, just cash-cows.They are fun shooters though.

Games I would be interested to see:
    SOCOM 4
    Twisted Metal PS3

I think with the comments made it crystal clear that the article is a bunch of fanboy rants, PS3 2010 line up is far ahead of 360′s

but that’s just half of the issue, the other half is that the 360 is maxed out technically, no 360 game since Gears 2 came out 16 months ago showed any graphical edge, that’s why they’re putting all their chips on Natal, they can’t compete with Sony’s titles anymore

the 360 can still feature rock solid graphic but the wow factor is long gone, and meanwhile the PS3 raises the graphical bar every few months: first uncharted 1, then metal gear 4, then killzone 2, then uncharted 2, next god of war and gran turismo, while the 360 is pimping a game like crackdown 2 as one of the next big things ad the game looks like a late PS2 game

Natal might be successful or might flow but it’s just as irrelevant for gamers as Wii sports Resort, which is the best selling game of 2009 and no real gamer cares

  44. avatar Gladiator007 Said,

FOOLS!!!! If you think Sony isn’t in trouble, then you’re on crack. Sony didn’t drop their price because they wanted to, they did it because they had to. Go back and look at history because they sure as hell didn’t drop the PS2′s price this early in its life.
FACT1: Sony has been behind the 8 ball every since the 360 got the head start jump on them launching 1 year before. Sony was complacent, arrogant and just knew that Microsoft didn’t have a chance of cutting into their dominant reign. And they gambled it all on blu-ray. Well I’m sure they’re regretting that decision now. The reason I say blu-ray is a gamble and will probably turn out to be a regret is that Sony is banking on this 10-year life cycle. With how technology changes and the ever increasing popularity of HD on demand digital downloads, blu-ray will not have a 10 year staying power without major competition and technology advances. It is not the leaps and bounds that DVD was compared to VHS.
FACT2: Microsoft has been around the block a few times and knows how to innovate and thrive in the corporate arena. They’ve got a lot of muscle and money which proves why they are where they are, yes and I’ll say it, even after the RROD problem. To still be in first place speaks volumes.
FACT3: Microsoft smelled blood in the water when they saw they had a chance to launch first and they tasted it when Sony finally launched in all their botched glory, i.e., high price tag and not many games. If Project Natal turns out to be half of what they’re claiming, Sony is going to be in big trouble.

Finally, for those screaming that the 360′s graphics capability aren’t on par with the PS3, that’s an old and useless argument. If graphics were so great, explain why Uncharted2, and Killzone2 (and not one PS3 game to date) has not moved any consoles. None of their games have been systems sellers and on multiplat games, people play them 2-1 times more on the 360. It’s because there’s something to be said about the total package in a game, not just pretty graphics. Every year since the PS3 launched, fanboys and analyst alike have been saying “This is the year for the PS3..” and every year it’s not, that truth slips further and further away.

–Recognize an item in a series when you see one. Also, the sentence should have ended with a question mark.

–On topic: Competition between consoles only makes the games better. Pretty much every Xbox ‘exclusive’ comes to PC, as they are both Microsoft products. Games created for PS3 will never be as good on Xbox, as the storage requirement on their discs is much lower (Wait and see for MGS4, or FFXIII) Not stating an opinion there, but it’s common sense you can’t store 50g of info on a 10g disc without compression or trimming. The same is usually true the other way around though too, games created for Xbox are usually just ported to PS3, and look crappier on said platform.
