Molyneux: Move won’t be as big as Natal

Posted by Ahmad Dajani On March - 12 - 2010

Lionhead bossman Peter Molyneux and the mastermind behind the hotly anticipated action-adventure game Fable III and the forthcoming Natal based game Milo stated that Sony has taken a step forward by revealing their motion controller ‘Move’ but also he thinks that Sony’s motion controller isn’t as big a step as something like Natal.

In an interview with Eurogamer, when they asked the legendary designer if he has seen anything of the PlayStation Move which was unveiled during Sony’s press conference at GDC 2010, he answered:

“Yes, I have seen some of it. We’re not really surprised, are we? I mean at E3 last year we saw they were having a wand, and that’s kind of what I expected. It looks like they’ve taken a step forward but it’s not as big a step as something like Natal, I don’t think. This is purely me talking personally, but I think maybe it’s slightly more a device for the core than it is for the casual market, because I think it’s quite precise.”

As you can see, Molyneux claimed that Move won’t be as big as Natal because Sony’s device is quite precise so it will be more targeted for core than to the casual market. Also, he explained that as a designer he would like to get his hands on Sony’s new peripheral:

“As a designer it’s another one of those things I’d love to get my hands on and to play around with. As a consumer, everyone’s talking about motion control now – I mean, I’m starting to get confused. It’s kind of like the arms race, with the Wii MotionPlus and now the Sony Move and now I’m getting kind of confused.”

We will have to wait until Natal and Move get released this fall to pass our judgement. In the meantime, what do you think of his statement? Does it make sense or he is exercising his usual PR work? Let us know in the comment section.

    Ah man, he’s just kissing Microsoft’s ass IMHO. Whilst I do enjoy the two Lionshead games I’ve played “Black and White” and “Fable” I think Peter is a bit tainted. Is Lionshead locked in contract or something with Microsoft?,Because I wonder what they could do both on Playstation and on Playstation Move. Peters is directly connected with Natal with Milo and talking about it at E3 and he’s really only saw Move from afar. I don’t think Sony will just aim at core gamers, look at the games they showed off. I think they basically have the Wii, the only thing Wii offers different is its exclusives. If Sony can bring out similar products with better gameplay and graphics then there is really no need for the Wii. I’m sure Sony will bring out a ton of casual and family games and a good handful of Hardcore. The only thing that I see as the downfall is, that the PS Eye won’t be as advance as project Natal. Next generation of motion/consoles could see Them compete with the next gen Natal. Allowing us to have the best of both worlds.

    I plan to buy both Playstation Move and Natal. I already own a wii :)

  2. avatar Cody Said,

    I agree with darius that peters suckin up to Microsoft. Natal is just a little more updated version of ps2s old eyetoy. I’ll admit it I am a ps3 fanboy but I’m tired of all these 360 developers or just Microsoft big shots always making statement in interviews about how their products are going to be better than Sony’s. Don’t get me wrong Sony does have many problems like overpricing but I’m just tired of 360 developers and their BS.

    @Cody

    It’s PR talk and Sony does the exact same.

    @Darius

    Lionhead is owned by Microsoft. Molyneux isn’t sucking up to Microsoft, he’s a part of it.
