Ninja Gaiden 3: Five reasons it could fail catastrophically

Posted by Ahmad Dajani On January - 8 - 2012

The 3D Ninja Gaiden games are some of the best hack and slash/action games ever made. In fact, Ninja Gaiden on the original Xbox was the only reason I bought the console back in the day. I finished Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 2 too many times and I have enjoyed the brutality and diversity of the combat and the challenging difficulty of the franchise.

Since the departure of Itagaki from Team Ninja and I’m watching closely how the third game will turn out without him. I want Ninja Gaiden 3 to be the best one of the series. But sadly, the more I see about the game, the less I become interested about it. Here’s why:

1. No Dismemberment:

When a member of developer Team Ninja was asked about why they removed the ability to dismember limbs in Ninja Gaiden 3, he answered: “people do not want to see that anymore.” First of all, this is bullshit. I want to see it because of many reasons. The ability to dismember limbs in Ninja Gaiden 2 made the combat more strategic and brutal. When an enemy loss a leg or a hand during the combat, it was a disadvantage for him. It was a beautiful design choice. Actually, it gave the combat a fight to the death feel.

Team Ninja wants us “to experience the feeling of your sword entering a person’s body, hitting bone, and slicing through the torso.” This doesn’t add any strategic element to the combat. The combat in Ninja Gaiden 3 looks bloody, but without the ability to dismember limbs, doesn’t that make the combat look and feel fake?

2. Focus on one weapon: Katana:

One of the best things about the previous games in the series is the diversity in the weapons you can use in the combat. Ninja Gaiden 2 has eight different melee weapons and every weapon is enjoyable to use and suitable for different combat situations.

when Siliconera asked Hayashi if we are going to see any new weapons in Ninja Gaiden 3, he answered:

“This time we focused on the katana and what it’s like for players to cut through flesh and bone. As you proceed through the story, you will acquire different katanas. We also have ninpo in the game. It wasn’t in the demo because we wanted players to see what it was feel what it is like to kill enemies with the katana. In the future we’ll be able to show you this element.”

No matter how you look at it and no matter how many katanas are in the game, it’s a step back for the franchise. No diversity in weapons is a big disappointment.

3. Quick time events:

What makes the combat so good and satisfying in the previous games is that you do all of the flashy moves in the game without a single Quick time event. Ninja Gaiden is about skill, not about how fast you mash a button. In ninja Gaiden 3, every time you are going to cut through enemy flesh there is a Quick time event. Also, there is Quick time events in the cut scenes. Quick time event is an outdated design choice.

4. Hayabusa talks too much:

Yeah, I got it Mr.hayashi. Ryu isn’t a killing machine and you want to flesh him out as a character. But doesn’t that ruin what makes him a great videogame character in the first place?

Ryu is a mysterious honorable ninja. This is how I see him. He kills evil ninjas and creatures to save his village and the people he loves. He doesn’t speak too much and only speaks when necessary. That’s what makes him stand out as a character and that’s why he is a hero.

From what I have seen so far from Ninja Gaiden 3, Ryu talks too much. Team Ninja, haven’t you ruined Samus as a character in Metroid: Other M?

5. Where is my orbs?

Is there an upgrade system in the game? Can I buy Items? No answer for these questions. Also, the absent of any type of orbs in the gameplay videos isn’t a good news.

Please watch the first 30 minutes of the game and tell me what do you think.

    1. Dismemberment wasn’t in the first Ninja Gaiden and it was still better than the 2nd.
    2. Big whoop
    3. The QTEs are only tutorials, you can disable them.
    4. You’re saying its going to fail because he talks too much?
    5. So what

honestly i like the way its turniing out. this game is supposed to have sort of a realistic feel to it, and as far as dismemberment goes, some of the arms, legs, and heads do come off. its just not exaggerated and weapons as long as im not doing the same combos and the weapons have different abilities who cares. the major things are story, enemies/bosses and gameplay.

I don’t think you are ready for proper good video game design.

please go back to playing copy and paste games and badly designed games.

NG3 borrowed inspiration from critically acclaimed games and GOTY nominees such as God of War 3, Portal, Uncharted, Batman AA/AC
If you played any of those games you wouldn’t be complaining.

I’ve never heard so much garbage from one person in my life. NG came out before all of those games and received critical acclaim. NG has it’s own appeal, it doesn’t need to copy anything because It’s gameplay still isn’t dated, even today, and no other game does anything like the NG combat system. It’s a unique standalone title. What insipiration did NG 3 take from Portal? You’re a troll. All those games you mentioned are good, and so is NG 1 and 2, NG will fail because it’s copying from games like God of War when it doesn’t need to. You’re saying a brilliantly original game needs to rip-off other games to be better? And anyone who thinks QTEs are good need to have their head examined.

And concerning the article, you forgot to mention #6: possessed glowing arm. Soooooooo late 90′s :P

since you decided to be the first volunteer to be skool, I’ll give it to you “mate”.
So games that were released back in the days and were well received all still have up to date gameplay standard right? oh wait why don’t we continue to use the old outdated party system design from well received FF7?
Or why don’t we continue to use 2d 3d FPS graphics like d00m did.

For your information Ninja Gaiden (Black) got inspiration from other Hack n Slash games such as Shinobi on PS2.

What inspiration did NG3 took from Portal 2? how about narrative dialogue?

NG2 was good? so says the lesser gamer.

Oh so because NG3 copying GOW3 features means it will fail? yes…just like how GOW3 was a GOTY nominee and was voted GOTY by other media.

and please don’t comment back because you will be wasting your time, you’re already skooled. And one last thing, go research what QTE’s are, NG3 doesn’t use any. Go play Shenmue and follow up with other games using QTE after Shenmue then come back to me son.

there’s A big difference to Button Prompt and QTE.

Wow, it’s rare to see someone posting something that isn’t retarded. Congrats.

Oh god forbid the developers want to mirror the critical and commercial success that is God of War, because having QTE’s, little dismemberment and a character that talks really ruined God of War III!… Oh what’s that? God of War III is the most critically acclaimed game in the genre ever with around 100 perfect scores and many awards, also it’s the best-selling game ever in the genre! That must mean that you’re problems are invalid. If NG3 is half the game that God of War 3 was it’ll be awesome.

  8. avatar Vinny Said,

I agree..sorta. Ninja gaiden 3 looks like a copy paste action video game. It will be “okay”. Not great, not unique, not memorable, just…okay. Its a safe and dull experience, lacking any of the grit and raw energy the previous games have. Ninja gaiden 3 will be okay, but not a real ninja gaiden game.

  9. avatar Brent Said,

So what anonymous is saying is that he condones Ninja Gaiden becoming a sellout to whats “award-winning” and not staying true to the series as we all know and love it? Ninja Gaiden is known for being difficult and raw. Slick and hardcore. Ryu Hayabusa is known for being the singular super ninja, mysterious and strong. The direction is okay, but the execution is looking to be absolutely horrible IMO. The choice to use only the katana seems to cut back on the versatility of Hayabusa. I fear this Ninja Gaiden will suffer from redundancy to the highest degree.

NInaj Gaiden Sigma 2 (without dismemberment) was better than NG2 because it had more playable characters.

I’d take more gameplay variety over gore physics.
