According to this Japanese blog comparison, the Xbox360 is implementing 4xMSAA while the PS3 is using MLAA. This is the first time a Japanese developer implement the MLAA technique. While the PS3 look cleaner, the Xbox360 has more stable frame rate during cut-scenes and gameplay segments. Check out the screens below:

Fans of RPGs and the Elder Scroll series are eagerly waiting to know if Skyrim will live up to mammoth hype. I have been playing the game for the last two days spending over 10 hours exploring the world of Skyrim, killing bandits and mythical creatures, completing quests and revealing the game’s secrets. So as a fan of RPGs and the Elder Scrolls series, I have been asking myself one question during my time with the game: Is Skyrim as good as we want it to be?

The game begins with a scripted scene showing the player on the back of a horse carriage with a bunch of NPCs on their way to execution. Unexpected thing happens during the execution scene. From here, your first quest is to escape and run for your life. The first quest in the game act as a tutorial stage for the game. It’s like the escape the prison quest in Oblivion. The first half an hour of the game might give players a bad impression about the game for a couple of reasons. The animation during the scripted scene is stiff and I can’t say that I liked the art direction or the visuals. But wait, do you remember when you escaped the first dungeon in Oblivion and saw the beautiful world of Tamriel for the first time? Bethesda did it again with Skyrim.

The first time you see the world of Skyrim you will be amazed by how much Bethesda has improved the visuals over its predecessor. Technically, the game doesn’t rival Crysis or the best looking games of this generation. But where the game truly shine is artistically. The art direction of the game is really leaps and bounds over Oblivion. Sometimes you are going to feel that you are in the hit TV series Game of Thrones. The world of Skyrim is really magical.

Looking at the beautiful skybox at night while listening to the great orchestral soundtrack of the game is one of the magical moments in gaming. The mixture of great art direction and amazing soundtrack makes Skyrim world one of the most beautiful and atmospheric worlds in gaming.

One of the weakest parts of oblivion is/was the combat. So everyone is expecting to see improvements in the combat system in Skyrim. During the first two hours I tried to use a sword and shield and play like a warrior, but I found that the lack of animation reaction to my hits makes the combat a little dull. Then, I tried magic in one hand and a melee weapon in the other and suddenly the combat became very enjoyable. I hit the enemy with magic until his health become low, then I finish him off with a melee attack. Maybe because I was expecting the melee combat to be as good as Dark Souls or maybe the lack of animation reaction to my hits is the issue. But anyway, I found that Skyrim is much enjoyable if you use magic.

I would say that the combat in Skyrim is improved over Oblivion especially if you consider the diversity Bethesda gave to the player to tackle enemies. You can dual wield melee weapons, melee weapon on one hand and magic on the other or you can dual wield magic in both hands. But I’m a bit disappointed that if you are going to play purely melee you are not going to have as much fun as using magic.

While the animation isn’t top notch and melee combat isn’t perfect, Skyrim does many many things right. The level system is flexible, the dungeons design is great, the quests are fun, exploring the world of Skyrim is a joy, the scope of the game is epic and the atmosphere is magical. So will the game live up to the hype? I guess so.

We saw many great games and a couple of new pieces of hardware at E3 2011. But it’s strange to find myself more amazed or interested in a thing that may not be real in the future. The video below demonstrate how Zelda is going to look/play for Nintendo’s new console, the Wii U. I’m a huge fan of the Zelda franchise and I always dreamed to see a mature Zelda game in HD. It’s like when I saw the first 3D Zelda game Ocarina of Time for the first time on N64.

The bad news is: the next Zelda game for Wii U may not have this graphical art style of this demo. According to Eiji Aonuma (one of the creators of the Zelda franchise) the graphical art style of the next Zelda will be tailored to best fit the gameplay and style of that particular game. He told IGN “When we consider making a Wii U Zelda, we’re going to look at the art style that best behooves the gameplay and the system and the components of the system.”

Wind Waker was a terrific game. But before the game was first shown, everyone expected to see a Zelda game with a mature art style. Eiji Aonuma stated that the same thing could happen with Zelda HD. I don’t mind seeing Zelda HD with a different art style, but to be honest, this is how I see the next Zelda for Wii U should look like. Also, I think this is the art style Nintendo should go with the next Zelda in order to impress Xbox360/PS3 owners and hardcore gamers to buy the new console.

I have been playing L.A Noire for the past few days and what I can say right now is L.A Noire isn’t a GTA game set in the forties. L.A Noire has more cinematic feel than GTA and it has more in common with games like Shenmue and Heavy Rain than Rockstar’s other open world games.

Yes, there is some similarities between L.A Noire and GTA. But the more I played L.A Noire, the more differences I found in comparison with a GTA game. If you want L.A Noire to be a game similar to GTA, you will be disappointed. Anyway, look below for some of the differences I found between L.A Noire and a GTA game while I was playing the game:

1. You can’t select what type of music you want to hear while you are driving a car:

You will hear original musical score and some classical songs from the radio, but you can’t choose or change the music.

2. Run with right trigger (Xbox360) or R2 (PS3):

Instead of pressing A (Xbox360) or X (PS3) repeatedly like in other Rockstar’s open world games.

3. You can’t crouch while you are shooting:

In fact, you can’t crouch at all, unless you are hiding behind a cover.

4. You can’t raise your gun while you are free-roaming the game’s world:

You can’t kill random people GTA style.

5. No inventory system for weapons or anything:

When you start a fire fight, you will only have a pistol. You can pick up weapons lying on the ground, but you can’t keep them.

6. No health meter:

No burgers to eat in order to replenish your health. Your character will recover health when you are not getting hit (Auto health regeneration system.)

7. In-game time progresses when you solve cases:

You may start solving a case in midnight, but the in-game time won’t progress until you make progress in the case.

8. No button to jump:

You can’t jump randomly in the streets of L.A like an idiot. The main protagonist of the game Cole Phelps will automatically jump only when he face an obstacle. Cole Phelps will automatically jump over walls, objects and other obstacles he encounters on his adventure.

The shooting and the action sequences aren’t the best parts of L.A Noire. The interrogations, solving cases, the atmosphere and discovering if a witness or a NPC is lying from his/her facial expressions are what makes this game unique and enjoyable.
